Kaepernick wants to keep playing, but destination is unclear

The question was posed because the 49ers quarterback's decision to kneel for the national anthem this season made it clear football wasn't his only passion. In August, two days after his controversial protest became public, he said he was willing to risk his life and career in his quest to place a spotlight on racial inequality in America. "They're scared they might lose their job," Kaepernick said Aug. 28 when asked why no other NFL player was taking such a stand. … [...] I've been blessed to be able to get this far and have the privilege of being able to be in the NFL, making the kind of money I make and enjoy luxuries like that. Four months later, Kaepernick is presumably just as prepared to leave the league if his activism becomes an issue, but it's now clear he would be ignoring a chance at a career renaissance if he did so. Entering Sunday's season finale against the Seahawks, Kaepernick hasn't evoked memories of 2012 in his 10 starts, but many might be surprised to learn this about his 2016: In September, before a Week 2 loss in Seattle, one story line concerned how Kaepernick's protest had formed an unlikely alliance with the rival Seahawks. The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand.
