49ers' defensive lineman Chris Jones has dealt with pain ORLANDO — Nearly two years ago, in a practice leading to Super Bowl XLIX, then-New England defensive tackle Chris Jones simultaneously felt a pop in his calf and the injured muscle contract. Jones gritted through 14 snaps in the Super Bowl with a torn calf muscle that required surgery, a diagnosis he learned of a week later when he had a second MRI. Jones, who was claimed off waivers by the 49ers on Nov. 8 and made his debut with an impressive start Sunday in a loss at Miami, has dealt with more pain since winning that hard-earned Super Bowl ring. On Sunday, he started for the 49ers in place of Quinton Dial and was a major reason the NFL's worst run defense limited running back Jay Ajayi to 45 yards on 18 carries. "I thought Chris Jones did a great job," defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil said. A 2013 sixth-round pick of the Texans, he was waived by both Houston and Tampa Bay before Week 2 of his rookie season. Instead of washing out of the league, however, he was claimed by the Patriots and led AFC rookies with six sacks while starting 11 games.
