Niners Fix One Problem, Then Get Burned by Another

Nov 14, 2016 at 9:02 AM--

After nearly two months of futility against opposing running attacks, the 49ers defense held fast on Sunday.San Francisco went into Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals as the NFL's worst run defense, having given up at least 100 yards to an opposing running back for seven consecutive weeks, a league record.Yet on Sunday, the Niners changed their script, holding the Cardinals' David Johnson – the league's leader in yards from scrimmage – to just 55 yards and 2.9 yards per carry.Niners head coach Chip Kelly had explained the problem in previous weeks as being that players occasionally had been out of position."I think our guys were where they were supposed to be," Kelly told the media after Sunday's 23-20 loss to Arizona. "I think we had the right fits. Guys battled. They were lined up right."Overall, the 49ers allowed just 80 yards rushing on 23 carries. In San Francisco's previous matchup with the Cardinals, Johnson had rushed for 157 yards and two TDs. This time, he was mostly ineffective."We showed the type of defense we really are," linebacker Gerald Hodges told Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. "It's not a fluke or anything like that. We've just got to...

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his
