UCONN Women's Basketball

A few times in sports history a team transcends the sport and becomes the yardstick for future generations. To name a few, the 1927 Yankees, !954-56 Oklahoma Sooners, 47 straight wins, Vince Lombardi's Championship Green Bay teams, Coach Walsh and Camelot, from 1988-90 they won 18 straight road games, John Wooden's UCLA teams with Lew Alcindor, Joe D's 56 game hitting streak, there are a few more, but not many.

Now we have the UCONN Women's Basketball team, going for a 4th consecutive National Championship. They've won 72 straight, their last loss was Nov.17, 2014, this year they've won every game by double digits. Their average victory margin this year is 37.5 (not a misprint). A few days ago they beat a good Mississippi State team by 60 points in the NCAA Women's Tournament. Coach Geno Auriemma has set a standard with 10 National Championships. His teams are unselfish. There's no one and done in College Women's Basketball, they are student athletes that graduate. The team plays all out from opening tap to final whistle, the effort is 100%.
Joe D is Joe dumars. Dimaggio has his own nickname.
I don't like Geno Auriemma, but the record of the program he's built speaks for itself. The UCONN women have dominated college basketball for the better part of the past two decades. Auriemma coaches the right way and his teams play the game the right way. I have no reason to watch women's college basketball, but I did like Pat Sumitt, at least UCONN would have some competition if she were still healthy enough to coach.

Sure, if you're not following it does not exist.

Think about it. They have been killing the competition for years. Years. This isn't like a pro team where you can build a core and keep that core for 10 years.

The team completely changes year in and out. Simple fact is is that there is but a handful of good women bball players and they just go to UCONN cause they are the best team.

All the other teams are sub par.

That doesn't make them all time great. They play in a weak league and just beat up on s**tty competition. They are like the Harlem Globetrotters.
I guess John Wooden's teams of the 60's and 70's can be compared in the same way. They annihilated teams during the 60's and 70's, Wooden consistently got the best high school players to attend UCLA, Gail Goodrich, Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Jamal Wilkes, Marques Johnson, David Greenwood, Lucius Allen, Mike Warren. But that doesn't count cause they are guys.

Not familiar with that era. But UCONN has won 120 of their last 121 by double digits. The other teams aren't even competition for them.
UCLA won 88 straight during that time period. Here's a quote from Bill Walton on UCONN Women's Basketball.

Bill Walton – "They play with great sense of team, great purpose, phenomenal execution of fundamentals, relentless attack," he said. "It is what every team should aspire to, regardless of the sport".
