And then he's got a Punch & Judy #9 hitting shortstop 0-2 and can't get him out. I was never crazy about Grant Balfour but the A's just might have an unmitigated disaster on their hands with Johnson.

I'd consider cutting Johnson outright. Just say "failure of a pickup" and leave it at that.

Feel bad for Chavez...pitched his a** off, A's offense deserted him after 1st inning, and then Gas Can Johnson costs Chavez not only the W, but might end up costing the A's a victory.
