But Cespedes was doing poorly during that time. Was he really *that* big of influence on how other hitters (the slumping Moss, Crisp, etc.) have at bats?

At this point my guess is that by the time the A's finish up their 3-game series vs. the Angels next weekend that they will be 2nd place at least a game out...and that MelBeane will keep pretending that they can afford to keep running Hammel out there every 5 days to get shelled.
And if they keep sucking at this rate, they'll be looking up at the Mariners before too long.
You are a joy ... I love the optimism

Just out of curiosity, what in the past two games gave you hope of getting back into a groove? They didn't look that sharp offensively Friday and yesterday they won on a past ball. If anything, in my opinion, they should be considered lucky they weren't swept. The pitching was great.

A's got a gift with Angels losing Richards, but don't think the A's will be able to take advantage.
I just don't see the A's going on any kind of tear where they win like 15 of 20, so unless the Angels just fall off a cliff then I think they'll hold on. I think A's will be facing Felix in the idiotic WC play-in game, and wouldn't surprise me if it's at Seattle.
McCarthy improved to 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA in eight starts for the Yankees. His previous shutout came last year for the Diamondbacks in a 1-0 win over the Marlins.

If we face king Felix in a 1 game WC we are donezo. He owns us
I honestly wish we just traded Russell and McKinley for Lester. And then bought Mccarthy for dirt cheap like the Yankees did. . Samardzija isn't an ace, he's a good pitcher but he wasn't worth giving up Russell and McKinley .
Our lineup misses Cespedes. He gave protection to every other hitter in the lineup (look at Moss' #s without Cespy) and he was a perfect cleanup hitter. You can't trade your all star #3 or cleanup hitter with 50 games left to play and expect team chemistry to stay the same.
If we had a rotation of
Lester, Gray, Kazmir, Mccarthy, Chavez
and held onto Cespedes.. Jeez id be one happy dude right now. Pomeranz is capable of being the long reliever out of the pen in place of Chavez
But now we look like crap and our future looks even s**ttier
Only way we win in the playoffs is if we get hot at the right time and our pitching is crazy good like the 2010 Giants
