Apparently the interest in Milone was VERY weak. As in very other team saw his success as being more about the A's pitching coaches than Milone.

Then don't trade him, keep him with the pitching coaches who have apparently made him what he is, and trade Hammel or send him to Sacto.

Hammel can refuse AAA service. I would have preferred trading Hammel, but maybe they were getting even worse offers for him.
I'm not huge on the trade either, but whatever. He was, what, the #8 starting pitcher now after Gray-Lester-Kazmir-Samardjia-Chavez-Hammel-Pomerantz?

I see your point but I think he is better than those last 3, should be the #5 with Chavez back in mid/long relief.
I really do hope I'm being over-cynical and I'm proven wrong, but from my very first split-second reaction excitement at getting Lester, it's gone downhill from there.

And re: Hammel, if he won't go to Sacto or possibly pen, then just release him, Samardzija was the one who mattered in that deal.

Milone wanted out.
Sure but it doesnt mean you have to trade him for Sam Fuld. LOL Awful deal
They kind of screwed him over by making that trade. He didnt deserve the demotion, so he requested to be traded. Unfortunately for the A's, Sam Fuld was the best they could get.

Question so when sonny gray pitches a gem... How do we win with zero runs scored?

A's met their worst nemesis tonight - an ump with a large strike zone. They need to learn to overcome that. They always score 0-1 runs in those games.

That's what I was talking about the other day, that the A's have this great rotation that's set up to only give up 2-3 runs per game in the playoffs...but then the A's will be scoring like 1 or no runs.
I'll say it again, Cespedes only gave brief glimpses of his potential, but he was still a force in that lineup, really made it a 3-4-5 that could make pitchers change to how they pitched to them and everyone around them...still have Moss and Donaldson, but it just ain't the same. And I know it could've happened any night with Cespedes, but how "fitting" and such a bad omen that the first game without him they lose 1-0 to the Royals and Jeremie Guthrie (who???) and his 4.50 ERA.

Will this be a black eye on Billy if the A's don't make it to the playoffs or are 1 and done?

If they win 100+ games and have to play the Wild Card game it's hard to blame the GM in that scenario.
As for the offense - it has been struggling for a while even with Cespedes. He went over a month of games without a HR and only a couple doubles, so it's not like he was the sole reason they didn't score last night. The whole offense has been struggling to score like they did earlier in the year for a while.
Even after the last month they've still scored the most runs in MLB. Right now they miss Crisp more than Cespedes, IMO. He sets the table and always gives tough at bats.
But regardless, Guthrie pitched really well and was helped by a very large strike zone. That combo kills the A's offense - absolutely murders them, because it completely screws up their patient approach style. And that has happened to them with Cespy (see: Verlander, ALDS, 2012-2013).
In a perverse way it may benefit them to fall behind the Angels for a day or two - get them focused at being the chaser and not the ones being chased. I think the "best team in baseball with no cushion" role is getting to them a bit.

Reaction? No s*** Sherlock, it's something you do or feel in response to something that's happened...should I wait a month to "react"?
And it's not a verdict, it's called an opinion. I don't like the trade, I don't think it makes the A's better, plus I believe it actually made the Tigers better because they may not have pushed the button on the Price deal if the A's didn't get Lester. But I could be wrong and this deal puts the A's over the top and they win a ring.
Anyway, thanks for stopping by, always nice to get random drive-by clown comments.

Hope mlb fixes this playoff system soon. It's absurd that a team can win 100+ games and be out of the playoffs after 1 crapshoot game. And I've said this from the start, so it's not homerism. I'm confident we'll win the division and it would even help us if the Angels get knocked out in a play-in game, but it wouldn't feel right.
