So what did Morris find? Since the start of this millennium, the Athletics have won 180 more games than we would expect, given their payroll. Then, using various estimates pertaining to the price of a win, Morris suggests that the A's have exceeded expectations by $1.38 billion. The next-best team, the Dodgers, comes in at $702 million. On the other end of the spectrum, the Royals have under-performed expectations by nearly $800 million. If statistical wizardry is your bag, then the column is certainly worth your time.

Didn't read the article, but wasn't 2002 when BoSox went after Beane? I'm no historian but pretty sure they've won 3 WS rings since then without Beane.
There's no doubt Billy Beane is a great GM who has revolutionized how the game and players are viewed/valued, but for all the "economically efficient" winning the A's have done, they've been to one ALCS in the past 20+ years.
It is impressive they've managed to compete with the big-$$ teams and make the playoffs so many times in the Beane era, but the fact remains when push comes to shove, up to this point those teams with their money and their big name stars have had their way with the A's in the postseason. I'm hoping it will be different this year, but not gonna be surprised if it isn't.

Where my A's fans at? HUGE win tonight, even if it was the Lastros. I pick on Cespedes quite a bit, and have complained how he generally sucks in clutch situations, but he came through tonight, fought off a great pitch on the hands and flared it into shallow right.
Would be nice to end the roadie by taking 2/3, but Hammel going tomorrow and he hasn't looked good yet for the A's...I still would not be shocked if they moved him before the deadline. And speaking of not looking good, even though Chavez was good 2 starts ago, his 15 minutes of fame from his great start are up, time for him to go back to the pen and recall Milone.
Looking ahead dept, 10-game home stand vs KC, TB, and MIN. Even though KC and TB both decent .500-ish teams, the A's need to go 7-3 at worst

Great win for a team that needed to wake up a bit on offense. The Orioles defeatimg the Angels in 12 was also nice.
Trade rumors are flying. Should be an interesting couple of days.

Man, this is disappointing. The Astros have jumped all over the A's in every game in this series. Glad to get the win last night, but this is going to be a tough road to win the division at this pace! The Angels dont seem to be slowing down.

Hamel is more disappointing. He has not pitched even close to decent in any outing with the A's so far. Either he is not as good as advertised, or he does not want to be here.

Hammel is now Johnson 2.0. Especially disappointing since Pomerantz and Milone were pitching far better than he has before they were put on IR / sent to AAA.
Astros seem to have a team goal to beat the A's this year. Wouldn't be surprised if they feel extra motivated to beat them after the A's went, what, 17-2 against them last year?

Got something on my phone earlier that the A's could be a dark horse team for Lester

The Athletics have acquired Jon Lester from the Red Sox, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com (Twitter links). In what will be a blockbuster deal, Jonny Gomes and Yoenis Cespedes will head to Boston.
