You guys obviously missed his intention to send out a positive message, which is athletes have come back from gruesome injuries to be even better than before

I think the train of thought here was more of a self-injury perspective, not an athlete causing the injury.

That injury makes me feel sick to my stomach and very sad. Horrible that it happened on front of bench. Would have been scarred I was there.
