Winter Roundup: Martinez dazzles as starter, for now

Martinez, 22, has made two starts in the Dominican Winter League this offseason for the Aguilas Cibaenas and has been predictably dominant. In his Dec. 20 start, Martinez struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings, and in his first start – six days earlier – he struck out two and pitched two innings. He did not allow an earned run in either outing, and has permitted only three baserunners (all on hits) in 6 1/3 innings. He's making short, tidy cameos during a winter when the Cardinals have asked him to prepare for spring training as a starter.

Tim McCarver near deal to return


ST. LOUIS -- That was one short break for Tim McCarver.

The former major league catcher told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Thursday night that he is near a deal to broadcast about 30 Cardinals games this season for Fox Sports Midwest. McCarver retired from his position on Fox's national baseball broadcast after the World Series.

McCarver made his major league debut with St. Louis in 1959 and helped the Cardinals win two World Series titles in the 1960s.

McCarver, 72, told the Post-Dispatch that returning to St. Louis is "fabulous, a complete merry-go-round, it's wonderful."

You realize Tim McCarver sucks, right? Youre excited to hear him feel his way through a baseball broadcast like hes in a pitch black room?

The fact that he won the Ford C. Frick award last year is an absolute travesty.
