The Spurs are a really interesting case study. They've had the same coach & Top 3 players for the last 10 years. I can't even think of anyone else in all of sports who's had their best 3 players and coach together for FIVE years, much less for 10. One thing that's kinda bittersweet about coaching HS ball is that I feel like both years the kids just really started to "get it" right when the season was ending. Having the same top guys running the same system from the same great coach for that long is an ENORMOUS advantage. Heck, even a lot of their role players have been there a really long time compared to role players on other teams. I'm surprised more teams don't try to do this, especially in small markets.
The Spurs drafted the greatest PF to ever play the game. They have one of the greatest coaches ever. The Bulls had Phil, Jordan and Pippen for what would have been 10+ years had Jordan not retired. Twice. It's easy to assemble a core that will last when you've got some of the greatest players to ever play. It's not like you pick up a Jordan or a Duncan in every draft.
If there's one team that has a shot at duplicating what the Spurs have done, it's OKC, but I think they may have boned that by trading away Harden.
