obviously it makes them better, just dont know HOW much better...

it would be like the giants making a trade for Greinke

Most of the speculation this morning over Cliff Lee’s surprise move to the Phillies is centering on his wife; Kristen apparently hates New York (getting spit on didn’t help), and loves Philadelphia. But until today on Colin Cowherd’s ESPN radio show, I hadn’t heard anyone mention another potentially huge factor. From a commenter over at The 700 Level:
Just heard on Colin Cowherd’s show that Cliff Lee’s son is in remission for leukemia and that his decision was going to be based off of more than money. He also mentioned that Philadelphia has the #1 childrens’ hospital in the country which may have played a major role in his decision. To me this guy epitomizes everything that Philadelphia is: humble, hard-working, focused on his family, not all about the money. Here’s a toast to you Clifton, may you get a few rings during your second time here.
That’s not far-fetched. Lee’s son, Jaxson, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia at the age of four months, and was given a 30 percent chance to live. But today he’s in remission, active and healthy. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the most renowned pediatric care institutions in the nation; in its latest rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked it in the top three in the nation in nine of 10 categories, including No. 2 among best cancer hospitals.
However, Jaxson is now reported to be cancer-free; receiving follow-up care once a year at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. In November, Lee and his wife made a $1 million donation to the hospital, which will fund an endowed chair in pediatric hematology/oncology.
So regardless of the exact reasons, can we just say that Cliff Lee is still getting paid, and he’s a class act, and leave it at that? It’s true what the Beatles said, you know. Money can’t buy me love.

it would be like the giants making a trade for Greinke
Werth and Crawford cost 268 million though and Lee cost 100. Pretty big difference

Plus, I'm pretty sure the Phillies have a very solid lineup even without Werth.

i didnt say both. i said OR.
an extra 26 mil woulda got them werth or an extra 42 woulda got them crawford.
i dunno. ive been burned by 100 million dollar pitchers, maybe i dont think any deserve it.

But the problem with Phillies lineup is they will now be succeptible to left-handed pitching more than ever:
Left handed batters
- Rollins (switch)
- Victorino (switch)
- Utley
- Howard
- Ybanez
Right handed batters
- Ruiz
- Polanco
A good pitcher like Johan Santana will have their way with them.

LOL I thought you said both. My bad. I disagree though. Cliff Lee is truly an impact pitcher and will be a bigger impact in my opinion. Werth's contract is just stupid on how much he was paid. Paying $26 more for Werth would have been foolish in my opinion. It certainly wouldnt have gotten the team and city energized like Cliff Lee has.

disagree with Skeet
having 2 Cy Young winners + Oswalt, Hamels >>>>> Werth or Crawford
we all saw what great pitching can do in the post season

by no means am i saying werth is WERTH his contract and i understand the energizing the city part of it but i mean, meh. their lineup isnt nearly as scary. they really coulda used pat burrell haha.
that pitching will be ridiculous when we face them in the NLCS
just hella shocking that they pulled Lee. Wow.
f**k it, lets get GREINKE!!!

Philly did a great job. They got a guy who really wanted to be a Phillie and take less money to be part of something special. On the other hand, Werth was out for nothing but the most money and signed with a team destined for last or second to last.
It was a great fit for both sides. It had nothing to do with matching the Giants or anyone. As Crazy said, it was all about bringing in an amazing pitcher to add to an already sick staff.
I really am thankful that the Phillies arent in the NL West. They would be impossible to finish ahead of for 162 games. In a 5 or 7 game series? As we proved anything can happen.

This thread is funny. I bet they signed him because he's a badass pitcher, and not many other reasons.
yes he is, thats the main reason, but they also like everyone else saw what great late season pitching can do to an awesome hitting teams like theirs and Texas. If you can't beat them....join them. They now have a much better chance to compete with a team like the Giants in Post Season. It was a great move.
Yes, I'm sure they saw that starting around 60 years ago. That's not a new thing.
Exactly. To even suggest that the Phillies panicked and had to go out and sign Cliff Lee because of the Giants is really stupid. The Dodgers of the 60's, the Orioles of the 70's, the Braves of the 90s. All amazing pitching staffs that were 3 and 4 aces deep. Wow.. such a new idea. LOL
I don't think they panicked or anything, but when they traded for Oswalt, they (and everyone else - except a few Giants fans) felt that Phillies have the best SP in all of N.L. (if not MLB).
That was clearly not the case in the post-season. They assumed they have assembled the best rotation. After losing to the Giants, they realized that they needed to add another piece.

Basically they both are saying that the (paraphrasing) "Phillies are following in the Giants model of great starting picthing". What? Other teams are following the Giant's model? Get outta here!
Oh, I believe it. I thought of it, too, when I first heard the news, but just didn't wanna put P******s and Giants in the same sentence (so I bleeped it out, there better). Also, it's a model of their division rival Braves followed back in the day.
