Ray Ratto (latest article, sorry no link) and Lowell Cohn (on Chronicle Live) both agree that the Phillies signed Lee in response to the Giants...
Basically they both are saying that the (paraphrasing) "Phillies are following in the Giants model of great starting picthing". What? Other teams are following the Giant's model? Get outta here!
LOL They think the Giants came up with the novel thought that pitching wins? Jeez. The Dodgers were winning WS in the 60s with Koufax, Drysdale, Osteen and no hitting. Having great starting pitching is not some ingenious new model invented by the great Brian Sabean.
Personally, I think the signing was more in response to what the RedSox did. The Sox are a lefthanded hitting team and the Phillies will greatly neutralize that in the Series should they both get there by adding Cliff Lee.
make no mistake, it was what the Giants did to them in the NLCS. And then they got to watch what they did to Texas in the WS. They signed Lee due to what the Giants did.

Didn't Philly win it with an all star line up of hitters in 08(whichever year that was)? Then last year the Yankees did it with a bunch of good hitters too, although they had pretty good pitching. But basically the message here is good teams win games, and they're trying to get better.

lol, your were calling for Bochy and Sebs head as well as some key players durning the season, you cried like a baby with some of the trades as well, the Freddie Sanchez trade is another deal you hated......I could go on and on......but I will not as I don't really need to. The Phils made this deal due to the way the SF Giants kicked their butts in the NLCS and They could very well do it again in 2011. It was a great deal for them 100 mil for 6 seasons, it would have been a great deal for anyone. They are smart, and this was a great move, who do you think the Phils are going to play in the playoffs in 2011?? The team has a much better chance to win with Lee then without him. It was a great move. The SF Giants are still a better team. Ilike our pitching staff 1 to 10 much better then the Phils. John, get real.

This thread is funny. I bet they signed him because he's a badass pitcher, and not many other reasons.

yes he is, thats the main reason, but they also like everyone else saw what great late season pitching can do to an awesome hitting teams like theirs and Texas. If you can't beat them....join them. They now have a much better chance to compete with a team like the Giants in Post Season. It was a great move.

Yes, I'm sure they saw that starting around 60 years ago. That's not a new thing.

well you and everyone could say this, but really this has not been the case in ML Baseball the last few seasons, so your 60 year theory is very old. I am not saying its a new thing, its just the awesome power and moves that the SF Giants ade in the last 30 days of the reg season and the way they played the Phils durning the reg season and then the way they were overpowered in the post season that made them make this move. Its a smart great move by them and I am sure the SF Giants season and post season wins have to be in the factor of them signing him. Remember they had him a few seasons ago and then lost him, it might have cost them another WS win. Now they have a great chance of matching up vs the Giants in the post season.

Jim.. it must be past your bedtime. You are getting cranky. Only a homer would like the Giants staff better for 2011 than the Phillies staff. They have 4 aces. We have 2. Cliff Lee has made the staff better than the Giants. Its pretty much a DUH.
If you knew ANYTHING about me you would know that I was the biggest supporter of Bochy all year long in here. In fact I was criticized for making excuses for him when people would second guess. So quit pulling crap out of your ass and making things up.

Exactly. To even suggest that the Phillies panicked and had to go out and sign Cliff Lee because of the Giants is really stupid. The Dodgers of the 60's, the Orioles of the 70's, the Braves of the 90s. All amazing pitching staffs that were 3 and 4 aces deep. Wow.. such a new idea. LOL

Was son’s health a factor in the Cliff Lee decision?
Rick Chandler pft

Most of the speculation this morning over Cliff Lee’s surprise move to the Phillies is centering on his wife; Kristen apparently hates New York (getting spit on didn’t help), and loves Philadelphia. But until today on Colin Cowherd’s ESPN radio show, I hadn’t heard anyone mention another potentially huge factor. From a commenter over at The 700 Level:
Just heard on Colin Cowherd’s show that Cliff Lee’s son is in remission for leukemia and that his decision was going to be based off of more than money. He also mentioned that Philadelphia has the #1 childrens’ hospital in the country which may have played a major role in his decision. To me this guy epitomizes everything that Philadelphia is: humble, hard-working, focused on his family, not all about the money. Here’s a toast to you Clifton, may you get a few rings during your second time here.
That’s not far-fetched. Lee’s son, Jaxson, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia at the age of four months, and was given a 30 percent chance to live. But today he’s in remission, active and healthy. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the most renowned pediatric care institutions in the nation; in its latest rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked it in the top three in the nation in nine of 10 categories, including No. 2 among best cancer hospitals.
However, Jaxson is now reported to be cancer-free; receiving follow-up care once a year at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. In November, Lee and his wife made a $1 million donation to the hospital, which will fund an endowed chair in pediatric hematology/oncology.
So regardless of the exact reasons, can we just say that Cliff Lee is still getting paid, and he’s a class act, and leave it at that? It’s true what the Beatles said, you know. Money can’t buy me love.

Philly hasn't proven anything with their "4 aces". Last time I checked, the WORLD CHAMPION Giants in the postseason were 5-1 against them.
