Playing great ball. His foul trouble problem is no longer anywhere near as much of an issue..PLUS he's hitting his FTs

Found this over on another site I post on...thoughts?

This article had been posted for another purpose but I noted the following as a rather significant, if ancillary, shot at the coaching prowess of the best coach in Magic history.

Quote:
Big postseason for the "NBA Coaches Matter" camp: Jerry Sloan's system trumping the injury bug in Utah; Popovich piecing together a difficult situation in San Antonio; Scott Skiles pulling off one of the three great Round 1 coaching jobs of the past 10 years (along with Rick Carlisle in 2005 and Don Nelson in 2007); Scottie Brooks weaning Ibaka and James Harden perfectly during the regular season (and having both guys shine in the playoffs); Alvin Gentry smartly building his bench's confidence during the regular season, then having that trust pay off when the bench guys carried Phoenix to a Game 5 win; and, of course, Denver's semi-collapse without Karl running the show.

Is it possible that coaches are getting better? We have eight good ones right now: the five above, plus Nate McMillan, Larry Brown and Phil Jackson. Throw in Doc Rivers, Mike Brown, Rick Adelman, Stan Van Gundy and Rick Carlisle as "at the very least, they've been competent and haven't derailed good teams" guys. That's 13.

Link

That's right. According to Simmons, the Eight "Good" coaches in the NBA are:
Jerry Sloan
Pops
Scott Brooks
Nate McMillan
Phil
Larry Brown
George Karl
Alvin Genry

The five "at the very least they've been competent" would be:
SVG
Rick Carlisle
Doc River
Rick Adelman
Mike Brown

SERIOUSLY??? SERIOUSLY???

How on earth Stan gets lumped with Rick Carlisle, Doc Rivers and Mike Brown and below Alvin Gentry, Nate McMillan and Scotty Brooks I have no freaking clue.

Can we, for just a moment, examine Stan's head coaching resume.
He's coached 5 full seasons in the NBA.
In every single season his team has made the playoffs
In every single season except his first his team has won their division
In every single season except his first his team has made it to AT LEAST the conference semifinals
In the 4 seasons so far he has made it to the Conference Finals Twice and the NBA Finals Once
He has NEVER lost to a lower seeded team in the playoffs.

The Heat record the year before Stan took over 25-57
The Magic Record the year before Stan took over 40-42

Dude is a stud and its about time he gets some respect. For Bill Simmons to lump Stan into the "competent and haven't derailed good teams" bracket of coaches is a load of BS. SVG is one of the TOP 5 coaches in the NBA without questions and Simmons need to find himself a clue.

Josh Smith already giving up. Joe Johnson? He's still thinking he's a max contract player...
