I knew Javier Capetillo from the days at LA Boxing Gym in downtown LA. Back then margo was still a contender. Capetillo was one of the best trainers around having a lot of world champion and former champs in his stable. He had Alejandro Cobrita Gonzalez, Jorge Maromero Paez to name a few.
At that time Shane Mosley, Oscar dela hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez would go to spar at the gym. It was one of the best gyms around. Chicanito Hernandez's brother Rudy would bring fighters around. There were many great fighters that would come around at the time.
Capetillo had a great reputation among trainers and fighters. After LA boxing closed down, Capetillo went to work at the Maywood Boxing gym. He also worked at the Azteca Gym in Bell. Both well known and respected gyms.
As Capetillo claims that the loaded wraps were used in training, I have never to this day ever heard of using plaster wraps for training while injured. It defies logic. No one in the right mind would do something like that other than to hurt an opponent.
The notion that margo didnt know what was in the wraps is also absurd. As a fighter you have to know. You feel a difference in your wraps. You are there watching what goes on with your wraps. You as the fighter are ultimately responsible for your team and equipment.
Margo knew, Capetillo knew what they were doing was wrong. The thing that bugs me the most isbthat the comission supervisor didnt catch it. Margo gad one hand wrapped and signed off already. Mosleys trainer was not present for that one. He came in while they were wrapping the second hand. He complained to the supervisor why they didnt wait for him. He had Capetillo cut the wraps and redo them both. Thats when the plaster pack was discovered.
The comission dropped the ball on that one. The comission supervisor should have been investigated to see if he was paid off to look the other way with the first wrap.
This is nothing new, and there are rumors that Trinidad also used loaded wraps during his career in some of the fights he had in Vegas.
