Alex Smith has the best chance to succeed and start this year because of the following reasons:
- Raye's offense is quite simplistic. Urban Meyer, Smith's coach in college, has stated that Smith can only exceed if he fully grasps an offense. An easier offense will allow Smith to take command of the football team.
- The OL has some continuity. Staley-Baas-Heitmann-Rachal will return as starters of their respective position, while Marvel Smith will start at RT. A vet on the right side, along with the continuity for the rest of the offense, will greatly decrease our sack numbers.
- Mike Singletary allows Alex Smith to push the reset button on his NFL career. Almost fully healthy now, he'll be able to start a new relationship with the head coach. We all know that Smith had a falling out publicly with Mike Nolan when he was the head coach. The new contract, along with the new HC, will reduce the stress on Smith for this season.
- The new attitude. In a recent article, Smith stated that he's really changed his mindset over the off-season. Instead of being a passive-type player, he'll be much more vocal and proactive with his offense.
- Shaun Hill. While Hill is a nitty, gritty player that find ways to win, he isn't a prototypical franchise QB. All teams need this type of player for leadership on offense, as well as a marketing perspective. If Alex Smith can prove in preseason that he can spread the ball around, manage the offense, and execute consistency on some big-time players, he'll be the starter for week 1.

Alex Smith has the potential to be jobless, unmarried and broke in 4 years. As far as football goes,,, Smith has the potential to lose the number 3 job to Nate Davis. It would take so much luck and magic (winning the lottery type) for smith to be even marginally better than he ever was and even that is not starting QB material.
Smith could (potentially) be a 2nd string QB in the CFL - but he would be the worst number 2 as our northern bretheren tend to pass the ball a lot. Potentially Smith is a worse QB now than he was in college. At least in college "he" thought he could play and had a gimmicky system to lean on.
In closing Smith has the potential to ride a good team in 2009 to a new contract only to get injured late in the season or for all of 2010. Potentially Smith would again leave this team in disarray with no S.Hill and an under developed Nate Davis for the future.
Smith has the potential to cause further damage to this team.

Sometimes it seems as if you guys don't actually remember the Ryan Leaf experience. Let's review. Leaf was a very big guy who had a cannon for an arm and stood in the pocket. Even though there were questions about his toughness and character he was drafted high because of his physical tools. Over the course of his first couple of years with the same set of coaches, he didn't practice hard, yelled at team mates, would not take any responsibility for his own mistakes, yelled at the press, constantly made injury-related excuses to the press, bad-mouthed his team and made a number of enemies on his own team. He acted like a spoiled brat and staged tantrums during games and practice.
Now really. Does any of that sound like the way Alex Smith has acted during his time on the Niners? Of course he hasn't lived up to expectations. But that's it. He's absolutely nothing like Ryan Leaf. I'd rather you guys were saying "Alex Druckenmiller" because at least Druck was a good guy.

"Alex Smith was the hands down winner of Saturday morning's session. He really excelled throwing to receivers who were working man-on-man against defensive backs. In one four-pass sequence, Smith hit Isaac Bruce on a perfectly-thrown long pass (who was well-guarded by rookie free-agent corner Carlos Thomas), then fired a on-the-money crossing route to Brandon Jones (Allen Rossum covering), then dropped a long touchdown pass to Mark Bradford (Jahi Word-Daniels covering) and finished hitting Michael Spurlock on a quick slant."
Sounds promising
See bolded. Isn't Allen Rossum our kick returner? Grasp for straws much?
Was any other quarterback at the morning practice?
lol
Look at the guys covering the WR's! Man coverage! What a joke.

OK, time out here - you guys like to say Smith is not accurate, someone posts info on a practice where he IS accurate, and you guys talk about the coverage. Memo to player haters: whether or not a throw is accurate has nothing to do with coverage in practice. It's either an accurate throw or it isn't. Wise up and try to put a damper on the hating. It makes you stupid.

I guess you're right. Well-guarded means well-guarded. Doesn't matter who's doing the covering.

Thanks for noticing. Also a pass is either accurate or not, irrespective of how closely someone is guarded. Just so you'll know, my preference is for Shaun Hill to start based on how he's played in games, but I'm definitely NOT of the opinion that Alex Smith is a "bust" just yet. IMO, Alex Smith is still the QB on the team with the most potential.

I don't know about the rest of the doubting fans but the biggest fault I was concerned about with Alex was his accuracy was so way off last year. He seems to have that back so I expect much better of him. If that arm was such a problem for him to be so far off, it must have been a real issue. Funny Nolan could never see it for what it was.
The more I see of Singletary, the more I admire his Walshness or good sense and wise decisions. He is of course a hard ass as was Walsh but surprisingly the players love him wheras I suspect a guy like him in some cities might have a contract out on him. The niners were fortunate to have Singletary as head coach. You do not find guys with his sort of determination coupled with good sense and wisdom. Take Denvers coaches. All ego and bloat. I imagine they will be gone in a year. I was doubtful about Jimmy Raye as I wanted a young creative OC but he has a certain depth of sound experience that Hostler was totally missing besides Hostler always reminded me of a person who never had any ability and knew it. His attitude was one of defensive cover for his mistakes. I think Singletary was wise in that he consulted the other coaches and players. Something Nolan would never do considering himself so knowledgable and infallible. There is an aura of competence in this team now I have not seen since Walsh. I am hardly the first to infer this as many have said this team is different and these early signs have been pretty cogent in the past as to how teams do in the season. I am first off a fan of the team and the players and actually to me, winning is less important then fighting hard and playing well. I do think this team can do it.

i dont care what the haters say, ive been hearing good things about alex smith lately and i still think the job is his. two of the reporters in recent articles have said he appears to be winning the competition. he has all the tools to be good, and nolan isnt here to mess him up anymore. he seems like hes healthy now too. if he has a good understanding of the offense i think Alex will have a great year. and Alex having a great year means the niners will have a great year!!!

I wrote a couple days ago that Alex Smith would clearly have to win the competition on the practice field to wrestle the starting QB job away from Shaun Hill. Based on the practice field, Smith does look to have the advantage. But I'm still assuming Smith will have to carry that over to the exhibition games before coach Mike Singletary would make the call to go with Smith over Hill.
Sounds like Smith is getting better!
This was the play of the day according to the Mercury News...

Play of the Day
During red-zone drills Josh Morgan slipped past Dre Bly on a corner route and Alex Smith found him with a pretty pass in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard score.

Alex is getting comfortable in Rayes offense. It appears his arm and shoulder are finally heathy and his confidence is getting stronger by the practice. If you are a 9ers fan this is a great thing!

To those that believe the Smith won't even make the team and will be beat out by Davis for 3rd string, here is a recent quote from a trusted name,

-Matt Miaocco-
Can we please stop with illogical talk of Smith being the 3rd stringer or being cut from the team.
