Off-season film thread: Reuben Foster

Since so many things can get jumbled, I thought we could run an off-season film thread for a little while then merge it with everything else focusing on specific things each time. Up first, in celebration of his recent news and rejoining of the team: Reuben Foster

The first play I'll highlight is how good he can be in coverage:

Here, we're in Nickel on 1st and 10 - first play of the game. We're running our standard cover 3 zone. To beat the cover 3 zone TEN runs a flood concept. They dress it up though to disguise it as cvoer 3 zone sees a lot of floods. They run the intermediate route from across the field.

They first run PA to the opposite side to get the LBer's moving away from the play. Foster doesn't bite at all. Mariota first looks to the play side to make sure of the coverage. He sees the CB's hips open - revealing zone coverage.

You see the cover 3 zone has got the underneath route and deep route. Foster then does a great job of putting his head on a swivel to find work. He sees the deep crosser.

He sees the deep crosser and turns and runs with them - taking away the flood concept.

Foster's effort takes away Mariota's 1-3 reads - he then looks to scramble and gets sacked by both Buck and Tank. Coverage sack caused by Foster.

he looks like a goddamn DB turning his hips like that
I wonder if this defensive play is more of Warner's forte.

jd, that play you showed in the OP is a great example of what the Cover3 pattern match coverage requires from the weakside Hook defender - match any crossing routes. Saban's scheme does a lot of the same things as Saleh, or I should say, Saleh's scheme does a lot of the same things as Saban's.
In the season opener against CAR, the 49ers were repeatedly burned by the Crosser from the strongside #3.

Reid is the weakside Hook, doesn't notice the Crosser form the #3:

------------------------

RayRay is the weakside Hook and doesn't notice the Crosser from the #3.

As the season progressed, the players (Coyle, Foster) were doing a good job of identifying the Crosser.

Here's what makes him so special. He's great in coverage and even better against the run:

Here, TEN is going to try an inside tackle trap. They're going to leave Buck unblocked in a WHAM type block. The backside guard is going to pull and will seal off Buck while the Guard picks up the backside LBer and the C Z's down on the 1 tech. The playside Tackle will try and go around buck to pick off Foster.

You see them leave Buck alone and the Tackle is trying to get to Foster. This is how good Foster's reaction to the run game is, look at Coyle and Reid - they haven't even moved yet and Foster is already attacking the run lane. The DE is in his 2nd step off the snap and he already knows where the play is going.

The Tackle is trying to get to Foster, but that's gonna be tough with Foster already attacking inside for the run.

Because he was so quick off the snap, the Tackle had no chance of blocking him.

Good form tackle for no gain.

Thank you, jonnydel! These types of threads you take the time to put together are extremely informative and much appreciated. As always, football season can't get here fast enough!

I should add that the 49ers finally did make the adjustment in the CAR game to have the weakside Hook match the crosser. This must be done to combat the various three level flood concepts (Sail, Y Cross) that are known to bust Cover3.
Reid is weakside Hook

His reaction time is great, and the way he can avoid second level blocks by the OLmen is uncanny. There was a play where he made Travis Frederick completely whiff on a second level block, very similar to how he makes the Titan LT look in the play above.
This thread is so much more enjoyable now

If Blessyou can stay healthy and give us a decent edge rusher this defense can be pretty darn good with the improved secondary and better linebacker group.

Next year with more maturity by the youngsters and hopefully a legit edge rusher...I can see a top 10, maybe even top 5 unit assuming the young guys grow as their potential indicates.

Glad the bulk of the bad vibes from Foster's offseason has been lifted. Hoping for good luck avoiding injuries this year and excited to see the growth of the football team.
So this is the new Frosty thread.
Jonny for prez!

Yup! From the Mike spot nonetheless. Quick mental processing+quick feet+elusiveness > Defeating block ability in 2018
