I feel so much better about our defensive backs this year. Lots of potential. Just got to avoid injury bug. Kwaun maybe on the bubble. Going out on a limb and say Mcfadden makes the cut. Hopefully the chip on his shoulder results in Richard Sherman 2.0. Will be harder to stash anyone on the practice squad this year. Very unlikely we do anymore FA signings in this area I think.

There is a lot of talent at DB that is for sure. A lot of raw talent but a lot of upside. Real good size to. Jeff Hafley has some toys to work with

Me to. I think he makes it and has a good career in SF. I think D.J Reed makes it and has a solid career here as nickel corner. I love K'Waun Williams but do we keep two guys are basically the same player? I kinda hope so, at least for this year.
Much better talent if Sherman recovers... Sherman > Dontae Johnson and Witherspoon Y2 vs. Witherspoon Y1

But the depth should be a ton better with an eye towards 2019 ..and 2020.

RCB: Ahkello Witherspoon; Jimmie Ward, Tyvis Powell & Tarvarus McFadden
S/CB: K'Waun Williams; D.J. Reed, Emmanuel Moseley & Trovon Reed
LCB: Richard Sherman; Greg Mabin & Tarvarious Moore
FS: Adrian Colbert; Don Jones, Corey Griffin & Terrell Williams
SS: Jaquiski Tartt; Chancellor James & Marcell Harris

bill walsh always said. you can never have enough cornerbacks
Say what you want about Jimmy Ward but man is he valuable right now. He can play corner while Sherman recovers and then can kick back to FS or be a top nickel corner while providing GREAT depth at CB and FS. He's a valuable part of this football team.

Last year was a great reminder of that, and I think a good learning experience for Shannalynch. Brock gone, RR sucked and traded, DJ as expected which was lousy. We had a rookie at CB and no depth behind him as the season wore on. Should be much better off now.

His problem will always be health which makes him unreliable. Anything they get out of Ward is a bonus. His play, outside of his 2nd game against Marshall, is good enough and his versatility is amazing, but that health....

Not really. He's trying out at CB and like Kyle said, IF he plays well there, he stays. Keep in mind too that we brought in two prototypical CB's in Tarvarus McFadden & Tarvarious Moore, and then brought in D.J. Reed and Emmanuel Moseley to back up K'Wuan Williams in the slot and Corey Griffin & Terrell Williams for FS & Marcell Harris for SS (hybrid).

In short, he's just a body. His guaranteed $8.5M may ensure he stays on the 53 though, bumping one of these young guys.

PS: His versatility was important in past years but now we can and did, grab specialists.

Meh, he's paycheck doesn't backup his worth on this team imo. He can play all over which is nice but who's he playing over? Sherman (if healthy)? No Colbert? No...maybe williams in the slot but I like Reed to throw in some good competition there as well.
