Do they always hand time? Is it difficult to set up electronic timing equipment or something?

Yes, everything is hand timed at pro days.
Many scouts are dinosaurs with tattered reflexes and vision trying to start and stop a stopwatch to time these super athletes. Hence the discrepancy between combine and pro day numbers.

Ran a 4.32 at pro day. I think he coulve hit a 4.39 or 4.4 flat at the combine. If not 4.42 at worst imo.
Dude still crazy fast.

Just read this and thought, plus it's the pro day, the school obviously wants to make the kid look better, I've only seen kids be faster and better at drills at pro days, never seen a kid take a step back from the combine at his pro day, have you ? Wait didn't Bridgewater do horrible at his pro day or was that the combine and he did better at his pro day ?

Several players did have worse times at pro days this year. It happens every year honestly. But most people don't notice unless they're researching a high volume of prospects.

Said this in a bunch of threads already but saw an article from a few years back that compares players who ran both pro day and combine. They ran 4.51 at pro day on average and 4.54 at the combine. The difference is small. With a difference of .03 that means that some ran faster at the combine, some faster at the pro day. Slightly leaning to faster at their pro days.
As for the schools making their players look better, they're not the ones timing them. Scouts do their own timings.

Some pro-days do have electronic timing but the scouts always time it themselves too. I recently saw an electronic timing system that fit in a pocket and worked with a cell phone.

No more retreads or marginal players who have been just hanging around on the roster for lack of someone better. After the success of last year's draft it is really neat to be able to look forward to how this new crop of picks might do. McGlinchey, Moore, McFadden, and Warner are the ones I am most interested in seeing because it seems like they have the most potential to contribute in areas of need. Pettis, James and Reed are all playing positions that I feel pretty good about but still have a chance to shine.

Moore looks good, hope he can learn the Outside CB spot quickly, but either way, he is depth at FS in case we trade Ward, or just in case.
10 DBs are what I have making the 53, Sherman, Witherspoon, Williams, Reed, Moore, McFadden, Colbert, Tartt, Ward, Harris, with next 2 having best shot being Moseley and James.
As for rooks I'm most excited to see McGlinchey beat out Gilliam for the RT spot, then make him expendable next year, Warner might be the MLB if Foster is suspended, Pettis will be out main Returner, with Reed also being a returner. Moore I cant wait to see play, a combine snub, loved his tape. I think McGlinchey, Pettis, Warner, Moore, Reed, and James are locks of our picks right now, with Street on NFI, and possible Taylor on IR(Stashed), maybe also Harris, and then McFadden, Moseley, Shelton, Dwelley have the best shot of the UDFAs. I won't say McFadden is clear favorite, but the $70K Base GTD is notable, and huge, compared to $15K for Moseley, $20K for Shelton, and Dwelley, plus we have a vet at C behind Richburg in Mike Person, and TE may only be 2, so Celek and Kittle.
I also have high hopes for some 2nd yr guys, mainly Thomas, Foster, Witherspoon, Kittle, Colbert, Breida, and Magnuson, while I expect DJ Jones to be inactive, same for Joe Williams if he makes the team. Beathard is our #2 QB.
Man, this final 53 is tough for me though, can't wait for end of July when Camp begins.

Speed, speed, and yes ... more speed. Sensing a theme here. Shanahan knows you can't coach speed.
