Shanahan Draft Tendencies per The Athletic / Synopsis by GoldenJoe

TREND #1: He rarely drafts Offensive players in RD 1
- Over 10 seasons Shanny's teams have drafted 4 offensive players in the first round and only at 2 different positions (OT: Brown and Williams) and QB (RGIII and Manziel)
- We are set at both of those positions

TREND #2: He NEVER drafted RB or TE before RD 3
- Only one offensive player ever picked in RD 2
- Joel Bitonio in 2014 (Browns) is the only time he's selected an O player in the 2nd round
- Generally finds his offensive talent later in the draft

TREND #3: He does draft Offense in RD 3:
- Nine (9) offensive players taken in this round over the last ten (10) drafts
- Finds undervalued players here, it is his sweet spot (notable names: Slaton, Reed, West, Coleman, Hooper)
- Looks for players who are better on tape than their combine measurables
- Very good hit rate here, Niners have picks 70 & 74 here

Tight Ends: The last three TEs drafted by Shanny (Reed, Hooper and Kittle) have all run 40's faster than 4.75 (combine average for TEs), he values athleticism, route running and catching over pass blocking.

Wide Receivers: Shanny has lacked recent success here, most of his best WRs were already drafted (Julio) or through FA (Garcon)

How relevant is what he did during the draft for teams he was just the OC on? He clearly didn't always have a ton of say (I doubt he wanted Manziel) and he probably would have chosen to draft an offensive player every round when he was OC.

I would only read into the drafts where he was with his dad or Kubiak.

Also, can't put RG3 on him or his dad. They didn't want him and wanted Cousins later who they still drafted. They or Daddy Shanahan didn't want to trade all the picks to move up.
Such a great thread every year. Much appreciated.

They've got to seriously be thinking about it. It'll cost more than that though.

Yeah, hard to read too much into these tendencies. He might blow those trends up this year alone but still fun to explore.

Yeah. Maybe a future late pick or a 6th or 7th this year.

Really appreciate that...started this thread 5-6 years ago just to keep track for myself and it's really evolved with others helping to contribute to it!

Finally some good news on the IR side for our young linemen. Next up TBrown.

Yes sir!

Nice to hear Sherman said he'd be ready in a month or two at the latest!
I read more about Dick's achillies heel operation. It's interesting how medical science has progressed. They used to tear open the knee to fix an acl, now it just takes a tiny hole. Same with the achillies. Wait till they start fixing concussions - they'll probably do it though the nose.

LOL!

Here's a couple of our boys staying in shape.
