19. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERSAverage offensive lineman grade: 58.2
The 49ers' offensive line has taken a big step forward from last season as they went from having the 29th-best pass-blocking efficiency rating in 2016 to ranking sixth this year with 48 pressures allowed on 211 pass-blocking snaps. The unit is anchored by its two tackles, Joe Staley and Trent Brown, who both are among the top 17 offensive tackles this season. Furthermore, San Francisco is one of only three teams that averages more than 2.0 yards before contact on inside zone runs and actually lead the league with 3.10 yards before contact on these runs. The 49ers' weak spot is the interior offensive line where left guard Laken Tomlinson and center Dan Kilgore rank 63rd and 32nd at their respective positions.

I think whats clear is we lack the RB needed to run this scheme properly. Also I think we look to upgrade the center position.
A dozen players were brought in this past off-season to compete with Hyde and Kilgore. Yes they won out but obviously the team was concerned about the positions if they brought in that many players.
Anyways, upgrade LG and C in free agency. Re-sign Fusco but have him compete with Garnett and this is a top 10 line in the league IMO.

Brown and Staley are fine but the interior is terrible. I'm not against drafting Nelson in the top 10 if he's there.

They may have graded out better than what we think of them, but I feel the skillsets of Tomlinson/Fusco/Brown - drive blockers, not known for mobility - don't allow Kyle to do what he wants to do regarding outside zone and the screen game. Early this season we noticed that the 49ers were having much more success with inside zone than outside zone. Good to see that show out from the PFF stat about inside zone runs. So while they may grade well, they aren't scheme fits because Kyle wants to get that outside zone going. To run Kyle's scheme properly, they need a couple mobile interior guys.

Agreed, we need a Guy McIntyre not Mike Iupati.

Credit goes to Shanahan and Garoppolo. Shanahan tailored his playbook to compensate for the lack of a solid offensive line. And Garoppolo executed it beautifully showing quickness and confidence to deliver the ball on time and ideal placement.

These are words from Bill Walsh: "The guard is going to have to be styled with the system of offense you have or the offense must be styled as to who the guards are. Typically, you style your offense in relation to who you have at the guard positions. You have to adapt your style to your guards."
-----
Kyle adapted to his guards this season by calling lots of inside zone, and Tomlinson/Fusco rewarded him by blocking well on those runs. Kyle made lemonade because that's what he was given. I have a feeling he will be at the grocery store to get some different ingredients to cook with in 2018.

I think they are keeping Laken too. Local beat reporters are saying they are happy with him and take into account that he's never been in an outside zone and had to learn on the fly.

Braden Smith out of Auburn in the 2nd round. Plug him in at RG and he'll be ready to rock. Has a tackle body and feet.

No. Our interior line is bad.
Improving on one lousy season isn't the same as being good.

We need to improve the interior OL for sure, but I agree with the title of this thread. As much as I respect CJ Beathard for taking those hits, many were his fault. He takes a while to get the ball out. Having two very good OT's makes our line passable at least in pass protection. We need the most work in the run game.
I'd love to see us add 1 FA guard/center and pick 1 guard/center in the first 3 rounds, but that should be enough.

Its pretty awful jimmy just made them look good with his quick release. The run blocking is turrble also.

Same for Isaiah Wynn in the third. Dude is a 6'2" left tackle. Rising stock. I like him for guard or center.

Yes it is. But when you have a good QB, it will look better than it actually is, and visa versa with bad QB play *cough* Kaepernick. Staley & Brown are good, but Kilgore is mediocre at best, and both guards complete dog s**t
