Kurtenbach: The 49ers' biggest need was exposed against Tennessee

The 49ers have their quarterback of the future. Jimmy Garoppolo has made that undeniably clear over the last three weeks.
And over the last few weeks, we've also seen that the 49ers have a few other foundational pieces for their rebuild:
• Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor should be catching passes from Garoopolo for years to come.
• Trent Brown and Joe Staley should be the bookends of the Niners' offensive line, protecting Garoppolo, as well.
• DeForest Buckner has proven himself to be an impact player and possible All-Pro on the defensive line and Solomon Thomas and Arik Armstead should be reaping the benefits of the chaos he creates in 2018 and beyond.
• K'Waun Williams should be playing in the slot for the 49ers defense for the next half-decade.
• The 49ers are covered at safety with Jaquiski Tartt, Eric Reid (should he be re-signed), and Adrian Colbert, all of which have played well and shown off their versatility this year.
• And the Niners have a middle linebacker, in Rueben Foster, who is a bonafide a game-changer.
This 49ers' roster is absolutely a work in progress, but it's not the worst roster in the NFL anymore (congrats Indianapolis!) — head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have some strong talent to work with in the years to come.

Disagree with article. Their #1 need is an edge rusher. Jimmy makes everyone on offense look better. A true edge rusher would make everyone on defense look better including the CBs.

A good DC that can dial a blitz can cover up the need for a #1 edge rusher...Saleh unfortunately is not that guy. It also doesn't help that he's awful when it comes to player rotation and utilizing his depth.

Kyle has said multiple times that the reason he likes this defensive scheme is that it forces offenses to put together 8-10 play drives to score. Becoming a defense that blitzes will compromise the 'bend don't break' philosophy. If this was a Cover1 scheme (man coverage), then the argument that a shutdown CB is priority #1 would hold water. But since it's a Cover3 scheme, rush 4, drop 7 is what this defense wants to do.

Draft Chubb at #4.
All we need is a good pass rusher or two and a number 1 CB. Those two holes need to be filled in the off season. We have a lot of needs to fill including the middle of the Oline. But I did think that the author of the article was basically accurate, Dontae Johnson is a liability for the backfield.
Aaron Donald & Co say the interior line is looking good to them
Should the 49ers go after Richard Sherman?

Totally agree....I mean lord Fangio's D never blitz and everyone wants him here.
So....what is their biggest need?

Fangio wasn't a big blitzer but when he did it worked.

The best QBs will eat blitzes alive. Titans blitzed Jimmy G all game yesterday, did it help them any? The best possible scenario is what the 49ers had in 2011-2012, being able to consistently get pressure with 4 guys.

Consistent pressure from the edge will lead to QBs stepping up in the pocket, leading to more sacks from guys like Buckner and Thomas.
OL and Edge rusher

Don't want that A-hole anywhere near this team

I mean his defenses are one of the lowest in the league at calling a blitz...I actually think Saleh has called more than he has this yr for whatever that's worth.

edge rusher over CB IMO on defense.
