BARRING a major trade for Kirk Cousins or Jimmy Garoppolo....This is what I would do.
1. Sign Christian Ponder AND Brian Hoyer in Free Agency
2. Draft Pat Mahomes
I believe the week 1 starting quarterback will be Christian Ponder! In a shallow pool of free agent quarterbacks, I think he still has the most upside.
If Kyle Shanahan can make Brian Hoyer serviceable in Cleveland, he should be able to do the same thing with Christian Ponder. Ponder has experience in a WCO under Bill Musgrave, has the accuracy and mobility for the bootleg game, and I believe he has learned a lot from his time in Minnesota. He also stated that he would love to come back and be a veteran mentor and bridge quarterback to a young draft pick.
Brian Hoyer also brings another veteran backup who's played in Shanahan's system, which from several accounts (including Matt Ryan), is difficult to digest right away
It's my hope that Pat Mahomes will last to the second round. I see some Aaron Rodgers/Brett Favre magic to his game. You have to believe if Wolf or Gutekunst is offered the GM position, they will see the same thing. Sit him for 2 years and I think he turns out to be the best quarterback from the 2017 draft.

I'm down, just minus the Christian Ponder part. He sucks, waste of time and a roster space. He can go back to painting houses. Sign Hoyer as the bridge QB since he knows the offense already and has generally been productive. Draft Mahomes, maybe draft another QB later on in the draft to develop as well.

Honestly, not bad...who knows how Ponder could play under Kyle but the bigger thing for me, is that he'd be a good mentor to any young QB. I keep getting the feeling we'll go with Mitch Trubisky as well and he'll certainly need a red shirt year esp. in this WCO.

Romo has now had a full season to rest his troublesome back and let some needed healing take place. He's definitely worth a look. I just don't know how much Dallas wants for him. But he would be a fine bridge to the future.
As for Ponder, meh

I'm good with that if we do sign Hoyer, we're gonna need another veteran if we do draft Mahomes. Hoyer seems to have trouble staying healthy and Mahomes is not gonna be ready year one IMO.

Agree on Romo
I think he'd be great to mentor and develop a rookie
IMO, he'll go out of the NFC and over to Houston and stay in Texas.
I think that'd be a smart move for him and the Texans.
Ostweiler sucks and the guy behind him is definitely better.
Romo could develop him.

I don't think we've seen enough of Ponder 2.0 to make this assumption. He was good in preseason for the little time that he was in there and he beat out Blaine (which isn't saying a whole lot, I know) to finish season as the second string QB. It would have been nice to see him start a few games, but I think the organization had worked out a deal with Kaepernick after his contract changes to allow him to start the rest of the season no matter what. He is a prototypical WCO quarterback. Not a big arm but good accuracy, footwork, and mobility. He's also a smart guy with a MBA. I think Shahanan can get the most out of him the same way Harbaugh got the most out of Alex Smith.

I doubt KC keeps Foles another year. My guess is they'll draft Alex's eventual replacement and Foles salary will be too mhch. He's far more serviceable than anyone we have. Wouldn't mind getting Foles as a stop gap.

Romo is not coming to the Niners. His contract will make it really hard to trade him. And if Jones releases him he is going to go somewhere he can win. He is an aging oft injured player and I can see him trying for Houston Denver Buffalo. Not that I am against Romo coming here but I think its not a realistic hope.

I feel like this option is the 'throwing the towel in' option. I have no faith in any of these options to get us more than being right back in the same situation next year.

Remember when he had good coaching, good supporting cast, and a ton of confidence?
