no wonder Cable took himself out of the running .

It's actually been stated by multiple sources that he dropped out because the 49ers are clearly targeting Shanahan.

The whole McDaniels was #1/Shanahan was #1 before/after McDaniels' withdrawal is still up for debate, but I think the reason Cable withdrew himself is pretty clear.

Not a bad thing in my opinion. Denise is the true owner of this club. It's a sign that the entire family is fully involved and committed to fixing this mess.

Let me ask you this: Would you rather have the true owner of this team completely disinterested in the process of fixing this team. Off on a beach in Waikiki? Not giving a damn one way or another?

This is really good news IMO.

I agree this is good news. I have more confidence in Denise than I do Ned and Yawn Dork.
I don't have much confidence in any of them.

The 49ers are a $2B organization. If they double their market cap they become a fortune 500 company.

The problem is that ownership thinks their personal attention is appropriate, where specialists should be consulted -- for football ops, background checks, personality assessment etc.

Come on dudes. This is the problem.

Probably it is like this at other clubs. But, I believe the better ones have more mature decision making structure and division of responsibilities..
....by better, I mean "more successful".....

Report: Denise York interviewed Tom Cable.

Why?

What does that mean? Do John and Denise interview everyone?

Why leak this now?

Who is doing pr for the board?

Please fix all this kyle. We're begging.

Probably because its a SMART idea for a woman owner to interview a head coach candidate with domestic violence issues in his past. If they were even remotely interested in hiring him, having her speak to him first was pretty much a prerequisite.

For all we know, she could have been the one that completely shot down any chance of Cable being hired.

In this regard I don't mind her being involved. She's still a Debartolo and was an executive with the Penguins when they won a Stanley Cup. Seeing how John and Jed have run things, I'm down for Denise taking on a larger role, whether it was a one time thing or she has taken a larger role in running things behind the scenes, I doubt that she could make it any worse.

Gadzooks NO!

Denise is even further removed from football operations than Jed.

It makes no sense, and -- unless it's part of the hiring protocol to have members of the board interview potential HC/GM candidates -- it makes our process look completely improv amateur style -- management-by-fiat.

Seat of the pants. I hope that this is part of a larger process that we can point to and say, yes, this is step 16 of the Senior exec hiring protocol.

You are seriously reaching man.

Agreed. To say that Denise York is "removed" from football operations is an assumption on the poster's part and is probably way off base. I like the fact that she got involved. I hope John York is involved as well as Jed and Eddie D. for that matter.

People tend to forget that Eddie D. made a bunch of stupid, misguided hires before he hit paydirt with Bill Walsh. A lot of that was just plain, dumb, luck. Those two found one another. Walsh needed a team and had an ax to grind after getting hoodwinked by the Bengals. Eddie D. needed a coach who knew what he was doing after bungling hires at the GM and coaching positions. Walsh just happened to be making magic down the road at Stanford. It was magic waiting to happen.

To say that the "assumption on the posters part is probably way off base" is an assumption on the posters part and is probably way off base.

SO, before we get into mudslinging on DY football knowledge, the real point is that the process can't be improvised like this. It's a sign we don't have our act together. All senior exec candidates should go through a similar Q&A and discussion with predefined personnel which should include individuals with specialized knowledge and experience of the interviewees skill set and expertise. Owners don't usually have that, unless they have been coaching or GM'ng for 20 years. The Yorks don't have that.

Owners can talk to candidates, as a part of the process, but there should be more structured interaction.

Teams with an intact front office probably do this.

But teams replacing both HC and GM probably don't. Why not judge this one by the results. I can't think of any franchise right now except GB where the owner wouldn't be right there in it.

It makes sense considering Cable was accused of domestic violence

First instinct is to hire football ops consultant like holmsy shanny maybe even riddick. Agreed that the marquee candidates dont need a lot of vetting to identify. Its what comes after the hire that we should be prepping for. Staff hire infrastructure development. Disengagement from ownership. I think a layer of football ops consultants on temp loan can be helpful in the three to six month process of identification negotiation integration off season preparation.

Im not familiar with the case history. But if we're going through leprosy mitigation procedures were probably not thinking about the candidate seriously.
