How many players will the 49ers next GM have to replace to fix the roster?

We have a bunch of depth players but no impact guys. We need impact at every level. WR,ILB,OLB, Secondary, TEs and RB (at RB I think we need a two headed system). I actually think Buckner will be an impact player but we need a NT too.

Some groups need help more than others but all in all we.need a lot of help in a lot of places. We have no game changers and we used to be stacked with them.

With great moves, smart management and football operational savvy we are at best 2 years away. That's not too bad, but unfortunately we have some of the most pathetic owners in all professional sports.

Spot on.
Almost every position group could be upgraded but that's not going to happen in 1 offseason no matter how much money the niners have..This defense is so young so the last 2 years haven't really told much about them considering how bad the coaches have been..im very excited for a big NT to be signed and see how AA and Buckner do with him..

Colin Kaepernick
Blaine Gabbert
Christian Ponder - Could be #3 next year

Mike Davis
Shaun Draughn

Marcus Martin
Daniel Kilgore

Bruce Ellington - cannot stay healthy

Antone Bethea
Tramane Brock
Eric Reid

Tony Jerrod Eddie
Mike Purcell

Michael Wilhoite
Nick Belllore

Those would be the main players I would drop the ax on ASAP, the rest can fight for a roster spot.
Somewhere around 30 - assuming that all of the injured players come back and nobody retires. If somebody doesn't come back (Staley, Bowman), the number heads towards 35 very quickly. Is Williams going to come back to the Team? At least a rotational starter.

We have about 8-10 on the roster who can be starters (when healthy) for a contending team. We have another 10-15 who are good backups/Special Teams types.

It's going to take quite awhile.

Tru dat!
I prefer to think in terms of units and their strengths and weaknesses. That said...the expendables are positions that need to be upgraded for competitive players.

OL: Staley, Beadles, Kilgore, Garnett, Tiller, Brown, ?, ?, ? [Expendable for upgrades: Martin, Theus, Cooper]. Need: Stout healthy OC and backups who can push starters.

WR: ?, ?, ?, ?, ? [Expendables: everyone]. Need: WRs to compete with the current group and make them step up or out.

RB: Hyde. [Expendables: Draughn, Harris, Davis]. Needed: these guys are OK but if they can upgrade it would be nice. Not one of these guys pushes Hyde.

QB: ?, ?, ?. [FA-Kaepernick is free to leave so...?]. [Expendables: Gabbert, Ponder, Lewis]. Need: FQB is needed and they should draft two to compete and find a FA.

DL: Buckner, Armstead, Dial, Blair (another year?) Dorsey (if healthy). [Expendables: Jerod-Eddie, Blair, Jones]. Needs: NT who can hold up and stay healthy against better OLs.

LBs: Bowman, Brooks, Lynch. [Expendables: Everyone else]. Needs: Pass rushing specialist and at least one elite ILB.

DBs: Least problematic group other than OL. They could upgrade but so many other needs!

LOL
Everyone. We may as well be considered an expansion team.
These guys can stay for now IMO

QB - Kaep or Gabbert ...having one veteran QB on the roster would be wise
RB- Hyde ...hate to say it, but we can do better than Davis, Draughn and Harris ...Taylor needs to show what he's got soon
TE- McDonald -Bell - Celek is a solid veteran, but it would be nice to add another TE with receiving skills
OT - Staley - Brown
OG- Garnett - Tiller ...we gotta find out if Theus and Cooper can cut it
C - I'm not sold on Kilgore , yes he is a veteran , but his ceiling is gone, we need an anchor and a center that creates running space, and holds it down in the passing game, Kilgore is a complimentary player , that could be a temporary starter in a pinch, but we need a Center that plays at a Pro Bowl level

DE Garnett -Armstead- Blair? .."Arik needs a strong season to show he can be a true 3-4 DE , Blair is a Tweener, he doesn't have the size to hold up as a 3-4 DE, but he does have skills and could carve out a role as an edge rusher . Dial's spot on the team could be taken by a younger , more athletic and aggressive DE

NT- Dorsey --we need help here, Purcell tried his best, but he is not a starting NFL NT, He too is a complimentary player at best, he should not be getting the majority of snaps at NT

OLB - Lynch ....but Aaron has not produced this season, this has been a horrible season for him ..Brooks, with all respect, it's time to part ways, and insert a younger player to help re-build the defense , Harold and Carradine have been HUGE disappointments , this was the year they could have cemented their spots on the team for seasons to come, but neither made an impact you would expect from a starting NFL OLB , it's time to look for talent at OLB and let them kick rocks

ILB -Bowman - Armstrong ....Ray Ray is fast and aggressive, but he would fit in best as a reserve and used in passing situations , his speed is his best asset to help our defense ....Bellore is ok, he is a solid special teams player, but we need to build quality depth at ILB , with that said, Wilhoite and Hodges also need to be replaced

FS - Reid -
SS- Tartt ....Bethea needs as fresh start somewhere else, we need a SS that we can build the defense around , Tartt should not be handed a roster spot , he too needs to prove he belongs, but being we are so needy for talent, we need to hang on to him, and let him show he can be solid strong safety

CB - Robinson - Ward -Brock- Redmond ...I'm hoping we see some potential in Prince Charles this weekend , I'm giving Brock another shot being we need depth, but he needs to step it up also, maybe with an improved pass rush his play improves

I love how you did this.

An expansion team would demolish us

I get that Kilgore can be upgraded, but I wouldn't just drop him outright. Need to add to the OL and let him become solid depth instead of a starter.

He's fine when healthy, but you can't go into the season wondering who your backup is. The fact that Beadles can fill in is terrific. Martin hasn't shown the same helpfulness.
