He has discussed the importance of team identity and leadership for years. He summed up the issues with the 49ers perfectly: Ownership only cares about making money, and the team will ultimately fail (no matter the GM or Coach) without a strong team identity and leadership.

He may not have the experience to be a GM, but there must be a role for Steve Young on the 49ers.

His role is a critic.

When x players/coaches can make it as a nfl commentators, analysts... no reason to coach gm ect too much work for similar money

Steve Young actually cares about the team way more than the Yorks. That's why I'd want him here. But it's a tough job and he won't even be offered. Everything he's saying is spot on though.
I want Steve Young as the general manager. He can do just as good of a job as John Elway in my opinion or even better. He's a lot smarter. All he has to do is steal pro bowl players like John Elway did.

Sb here we come!!!! We need a general manager that isn't stubborn and will overspend for players that we need to provide a championship run or at least be competitive. Having a team with the most salary cap doesn't do anything for the team or the fans.
I don't want Steve Young as GM but he's 100% right.

I pray that the story of Jed York being removed from football operations proves to be right and legit. We need a football guy running the team and the major decisions. That will make an impact throughout the organization.

The owner should pretty much just be writing checks and listening to the football guys and putting in his 2 cents here and there but he shouldn't be the deciding factor on major football decisions and he rarely should be seen outside of his owner's box or major press conferences.

But ownership aside the biggest thing we're lacking right now is veteran leadership. Navarro Bowman and Joe Staley are really the only guys we have who can legit stand out and Bowman is a bit too reserved and more of a lead by example guy.

Need to bring in a couple of vocal leaders who may not be the best players but smart guys who can help the young kids get hyped up and put in the right position on the field.

We shouldn't spend money in free agency just to spend money. Denver already had a pretty darn good core of young players before Elway blew his wad to acquire most of those guys.

What Young actually said is the Yorks don't necessarily not care about winning, but they care more about making money, and because they can still make truckloads of money even when the team is losing -- even losing in historically bad fashion -- that they have no accountability whatsoever to really get things right.

It's about priorities, and until the owners care at least as much about winning as they do about making money, the team will be lucky to have any on-field success -- specifically any LASTING success -- in the future.

I completely agree that Young should be part of the organization in some capacity. I don't think he'd be a fit for GM, but he's a great football mind and has a background that I believe would be a huge benefit for the team's front office.

Yeah. Steve Young would give them instant credibility but will instantly be the most loved and powerful guy in the buildin. Yorks will not like that. They are more into yes men.
Young is more valuable as a critic right now but i would love him as a GM. if elway can build the broncos into a superbowl winner so can Young. hes a smart guuy, hes been on a horrible team and hes been on some all time great teams so he knows what works and what doesnt and how to build a solid team. instant credibility and an insider perspective on drafting QBs since he was one of the best to ever play. Im all for it if hes even interested

And guys, what did Steve say? We need a quarterback!! We need a quarterback to build the team around and without a quarterback we don't stand a chance. So, think about that for a moment before you carry on screaming for Myles Garrett!!

I'd be very intrigued by this move. He's analytical, fact/bottom-line-based (lawyer training), could probably work well with Paraag and his analytics and contract negotiations, etc. The question would be, could he build a great scouting team, identify players that fit their coaches (outside of the WCO), navigate a war room, navigate during the draft process (trade up/back), negotiate with other GM's, handle various personalities, work around/with the Yorks, etc.?

They also drafted well. And like it or not, Elway is a businessman. Is Steve Young? I love Steve. Still got his white 1995 Jersey that I am dying to get autographed by him. But just because he was great, loves the Niners, does not equate to becoming a stellar GM.
