I missed last week due to a very busy schedule...and the quality of the game? This week was better. And better against a quality opponent. My comments at the end.

Location - down/distance - result
Own 45 - 2/6 - 3 yd completion to McDonald on left sideline - one look, quick throw.
____

O25 - 1/10 - 6 yd completion to Kerley, short middle.
O31 - 2/4 - 6 yd loss on completion to Patton, (forward toss on jet sweep)
O25 3/10 - 5 yd completion to Smith rt side
____

O40 - 1/10 - incomplete to Patton, short left. roll out action to left
O40 - 2/10 - 10 yd completion to wide open McDonald over the middle, 22 YAC: total 32 yds, CK hesitated then stepped up into the pocket to throw
A28 - 1/10 - 12 yd completion to Streater crossing R to L, again CK "climbed the pocket" to throw
A18 - 1/10 - 18 yd completion to Kerley for TD, pocket began to collapse, CK escaped to the right and saw Kerley who was wide open, blown coverage by AZ
____

O14 - 1/10 - inc short right to Patton, ball was on inside shoulder and DB knocked it down, had it been on the outside shoulder and down Patton could have shielded DB
O5 - 3/14 - 21 yd completion to Smith for 1st, good route, good throw.
O26 - 1/10 - 2 yd completion to Patton on rt, 13 YAC, good pocket movement
O45 - 3/4 - 7 yd completion to Kerley who goes up to pull down high throw. Good completion.
A43 - 3/3 - CK has Kerley open on lt sideline, would have been a tight window but chooses to run short of 1st, pocket held up well. McDonald and Smith looked confused on alternate crossing routes. Someone appeared to run the wrong route.
A40 - 4/1 - 1 yd completion to McDonald, 4 YAC for 1st down.
A32 - 2/8 - incomplete to McDonald over middle, McD sat down in zone but CK led him with fastball that was uncatchable. Lack of anticipation by CK. Would have been 1st at the A20.
Drive ends on next play as Golden immediately beats Brown and CK has to scramble for minimal gain. Kerley was open for 1st if Brown doesn't get beat.
FIELD GOAL
end of half

O27 - 2/8 - incomplete as CK stares down McDonald over middle who is double covered. Smith is the alternate receiver open 7 yards to the outside but CK chose McD
O27 - 3/8 - sack, Kerley comes open on turn-in for 1st just as CK pulls it down to run but is sacked for loss. Read showed defender on outside position of Kerley showing turn-in should have been open. Misread by CK. Would have been tight window but against good teams you have to make the read and throw.
____
O20 - 1/10 - 35 yard completion to Patton deep middle. Ball slightly under thrown or it might have gone for TD. Patton had 2 steps. Clean pocket allowed CK to step into throw.
A30 - 2/5 - CK escapes pressure to right and throws it away. Kerley appeared to be open over the middle but would have been a dangerous throw.
A30 - 3/5 - sack, CK ignores Patton on short cross rt to lt. Tries to run and is sacked. On time throw to Patton would have yielded 1st down. Patton had room to make catch and can the two additional yards needed for first. Misread/field awareness?
FIELD GOAL
____
O20 - 3/11 - incomplete, overthrow Patton on left sideline. Was well covered. McDonald was open for 5-6 yard gain on right but CK was locked into Patton. Good pocket.
____
A31 - 2/1 - incomplete to Patton in end zone, would have been PI but pass ruled uncatchable. Wide, clean pocket. Lots of time to throw.
A31 - 3/1 - 3 yd completion to Kerley for 1st down. Kerley had to reach back for ball slightly behind him which might have cost a yard or two.
A28 - 1/10 - incomplete over the middle to Harper who failed to hold fastball. Taking a little off the throw might have made it more catchable. Still it should have been caught. Another good pocket and plenty of time.
A46 - 3/28 - incomplete, overthrow to Patton who was open on left sideline. Clean pocket again.
____
O28 - 2/8 - 7 yard completion to Kerley on left sideline. Good throw low and away from defender where only Kerley could catch it.
O37 - 1/10 - incomplete to Streater on left sideline. Streater established position and turned to inside but pass was to outside and Streater was not able to turn and catch what looked like it might have been catchable. Either Streater not on same page with CK or CK missed with throw. IDK.
O41 - 3/6 - 7 yard completion to Kerley who made great leaping catch in a tight window. Maybe the best throw of the game. Good pocket.
O47 - 3/5 - incomplet to Patton who catches ball but out of bounds on left sideline. Kaepernick under pressure had to throw off his back foot and was off target.
____
O43 - 1/10 - 24 yard completion to Kerley on great leaping catch. PA rolled left for nice gain. Good throw across body.
A31 - 2/8 - incomplete to Smith crossing left to right. Smith drops a low throw that was catchable. Would have been TD.
A12 - 1/10 - incomplete to Hyde in end zone who can't hold ball on finger tips. Ball needed a little more arch to make an easy catch.
A12 - 2/10 - PA roll out ride 1 yard completion to McDonald, 7 YAC.
TD

COMMENTS:
Some good. Some not so good but overall an improved game. Receivers were getting open against a very good secondary/LB group. Windows were sometimes small ones but that is what you get in this league. Not every team allows wide open windows like NO. I continue to be satisfied with the Kelly passing game. Some lament it is too simple, however, when you at least have an available option on most plays against a quality secondary like Arizona, it says good things about the scheme.

Pass protection was perhaps the best of the season considering the quality of the opponent. In the second half when the offense usually disappears, the protection held up very well. Garnett had his best game of the season. Kilgore was called for a totally bogus holding call that was just good form. Brown struggled with outside speed rushes on a couple of plays but Marcus Golden will do that to some very good OTs, even Staley had his hands full. Considering that Kaepernick still tends to hold the ball too long sometimes, the pass pro is looking much better.

It was nice to see Kerley getting more involved again. He has good hands and squeezed some tough catches. Patton's route running is still not stellar but he was getting some room on occasion. He ran a good route on the backup DB on the one deep route that might have been a TD.

I would score 3-5 drops depending on the angle that was afforded by the TV. Hyde's miss in the end zone might be "shared" with Kaepernick who did not put enough air under the ball to give Hyde a better chance to catch it. Harper should have held a hard throw but there was time to take a little off it to make it an easier catch. One can reach their own conclusions on those.

Kaepernick was often uncertain in the pocket in the first half. Left early on a couple plays where receivers were coming open. Pulled it down and didn't look for receivers on a couple of others. Same general pocket and field awareness issues as in the past. In the second half, the pass pro allowed him more time and a clean pocket much of the time so "awareness" was not an issue. That made his job easier. However, game long, his performance under pressure dropped a lot.

Kaepernick made some very good throws like the throw to Kerley over the middle in the second half. That was great. However he continued to struggle with touch on the ball. Some of that is just a lack of ability to read/anticipate. Same thing we have talked about before. He does not read the defense well or anticipate the throw so he waits until the last split second and then has to gun it in there, and if it is not right on target it make it very difficult for the receiver to catch it. The left sideline throw to Streater in the second half is one of those. The ball was a little off target and coming so fast that Streater could only spin and get his hands on it but it was a very difficult catch that would have been easy if on target despite the fact it was a fastball. In the end, it was an improved performance.

Here are the numbers:

With no pressure = and above average NFL rating 101. Under pressure = 41. No blitz = 92. Blitz = 56. Overall = 87, which ranks him #30 in the league based on this game. That is higher than his season-long rating of 82, so there is improvement there.

Overall numbers: 17-30 1 TD, 210 yards. Against the quality of the opponent, that is not bad. I am looking to see if Kaepernick gives an indication he is worth offering an earn-it deal for next year or if he should move on, assuming the 49ers are given that choice. Sunday didn't answer the question either way. At least he didn't stink it up and puts us all to pondering what to do next. That is good news.

So, there it is. Tear it up.

Great read as always. I wanted to highlight this throw because it was a great throw. And it was 3rd & 19. Excellent anticipation and accuracy. When was the last time they even tried to convert on a 3rd & 19, let alone from their own 5 yard line? That was a gutsy play/playcall.

It was 3/19, and it was a great throw. The LOS and the call was a BIG surprise to me. I can't remember the last time we rolled the dice like that from that location.
Nice breakdown dj.
