1) Kap: Looks like he's improving out there. Some good throws against a good defense. Really hard for me to be encouraged by it however because he'll likely be gone next year. If he sucks: Yay, they can cut him. If he's good: Yay, he gets to void the deal.
Really hard to be invested in his performance at this point.
To his credit though he has been improving and looking more and more natural in this system.
2) Kerley: I think he's a keeper as a slot receiver. If Chip isn't here I dunno what that would do for his effectiveness, but he's shown enough to be a consideration in the future.
3) Armstead: Good. I'm glad they shut him down. I know some will say "hmmm", he's out and all of the sudden the D is better against the run. I think that might be a tad simplistic. He was never healthy after the shoulder injury and probably shouldn't have even been on the field. Additionally there is no way I'm gonna put 100% of the blame for that run D on one guy. No way. I still have high hopes for him.
4) Ward: That guy is a big part of the future. He's getting better and better. He is a bit too physical with WRs and may get a number of flags, but I LOVE the way he competes. Not bad for a college safety.
5) Hyde: If he looks like he did this week next week, I'd say shut him down too. What are they playing for? At this point its just about the draft pick.
6) OLB: To me, this is the #2 need going into the offseason. QB is #1 and I like Deshaun Watson (and that was my preference going into the week), its becoming more clear to me that Myles Garrett has to be the pick if he's there. I've seen some mocks that have Watson falling into round 2 and I'm not sure I buy that, but I don't think they could pass on Garrett.
7) NT: This is the #3 need for me but its really close to the #2. Now maybe Ian Williams coming back will go a long way to fixing this one...but they need to invest some $$$$ in that position.
8) O-Line: Really hard to find positives this year but on the whole I really think the O-Line has improved. Thats a low bar to clear from last year but I'm encouraged by their play. I think they may need a replacement at RG but having a good idea who 4 of those 5 guys will be moving forward is a damn good start.
9) Buckner: I mentioned that he's seemed invisible this year but I do have to say its probably a really, really good thing he's getting so many snaps this year. He's going to go into next year almost like a third year player. I have big hopes moving forward for the two towers particularly if they can put a mountain of a man between them (see #7). If they could have Lynch and Maybe Garrett rushing off the edge....thats something I'd be really interested in watching.
10) #1 need: It has the be QB. That does not mean however you should reach and take one with top pick. It doesn't even mean we'll be able to get on this draft. I'm sure they will take a QB at some point but you really can't force it if that guy simply isn't there. The QB I've liked all along is Watson and I'm actually kinda hoping his star falls a bit to make him available later, but building a stellar front 7 could possibly take this team a really long way towards respectability.

Fair enough summary, Marv.
Kap...definitely looking better, but looks nowhere near a 5th or 6th yr QB. He's adios at yr's end.
As for Garrett, he may be pretty tough to get with Brown's sitting on no Ws.
Like your DeFO and AA comments...and no, AAshould not have played this yr...but I understand why he did.
Hyde....agree, adios .Sad.
OL hasn't looked that good, but s till I like them better than you do.
NT...great if we sign Ian...but I count on him for NOTHING. If Garrett is gone, and there is a bono fide NT, take him...ideally, this. Is where I would overpay 3X to get a stud in FA.
Kerley IS our slot guy, no question, and Ward is the real deal
Leaving QB. No 2016 QB on team now makes it here next yr. Draft one QB high, one middle and one late..

Thanks Marvin, I had the same stance on Kap for several years, cut the ties. I want to see more from him this year, he is playing better each week and is made for Chip's system. If he shows consistency I wouldn't object to signing him next year. Bo and Ian Williams have too much wear and tear, I'm hoping they come back but solid players are a necessity at those positions. There is no QB worth mortgaging the house on,

One thing we are all glossing over is how terrible the o line is at run blocking. Seems that Hyde is getting all the blame and the o line is getting a pass. Beadles, Kilgore and Brown have been pretty crappy in the run game for the most part. And it's why Tiller was benched for Garnett. I know they have improved pass pro but the unit overall still isn't where this team needs it to be. We talking as if Hyde went down and some other back came in and rushed for 150 yards behind the same o line.
These guys are competitors and want to win. They didn't bust their asses from the age of 6 to this point to just sit at home b/c fans worried bout a draft pick. It's pretty easy to see why they are playing. See how hard Ward and Dorsey are plaything as to reasons why you still play. They type of guy that would just shut it down isn't the kind of guy you want on your team.

Hey Marvin, read Garnett and Dorsey had really good games.. you see anything from Harold besides a FF and Tank/Blair to reconsider those 3 positions going forward?

Harold seems to be improving setting the edge in the run game...but none of those guys are getting any pressure on the QB. The strip sack by Harold was good but Palmer was flushed out of the pocket.
Harold just seems to constantly get pushed past the pocket.

Kap is very much better a quartback! He is very improved to throw the ball and better move to forward the yards. He need learn how quick drill for 1 mins or 2 mins for final in 4qt. He need practice how quick for drill by 1 mins and or 2 mins in 4qt for final.

The pass protection looked very good against a quality front 7 in AZ. Best of the season. Garnett scored the same overall grade as Staley. Brown is still developing.
Run blocking is the big question. Though this is a passing league, you just have to open more holes than we are doing now. Garnett has now moved up to #16 in run blocking, so that is a plus. Beadles is #45, so that tells you one spot that needs to improve. Kilgore is a respectable #18. Staley is great at #5 but Brown is a dreadful #67. A mixed bag for sure which suggests a part the problem is that the parts may not fit the scheme.

This. It's a power OL trying to do a bit of both. Replace Beadles with Tiller and just let them maul people with power like they were doing in pre season and a couple games in IIRC.

I am puzzled why Beadles is the choice over Tiller. Tiller's run/pass pro grades were better than Beadles by a considerable margin. 78/75 compared to 41/65.
Need to do something because what is happening now isn't cutting it.

I was actually really surprised when they pulled Tiller for Garnett. Its not that I didn't want to see Garnett in the lineup, it was more that I didn't think Tiller played himself out of the job. He's played pretty well all season.

You need to buy the watson falling to 2nd round, he sucks. The pitt game was over and he massively choked and ruined their season. We already have Kaepernick watson is no different and probably the 4th best qb in the draft... kizer and trubisky are clearly better, falk kaaya webb are comparable. Leaving out kelly who we can get way late

Everyone runs the ball well in preseason though. Other than the LA game I don't recall them mauling anyone in the run game. From what people are saying, Brown and Tiller are just not very good run blockers. Seems to be the case. I'm sure some of it has to do with crappy QB play as well, but when it comes down to it I just don't think they are very good at run blocking.

....i guess thats one way to look at it.
Another way is that they were undefeated up to that point and he threw for 580 yards. In one game. Last I looked the D gave up 43 points so odd to me to blame the QB.
Yes he had 70 attempts, but he completed almost 75% of his passes . Now I'm not saying he should go top 5 (even though he might), but I wouldn't say anything close to "he sucks" after throwing for 580 freakin' yards. LOL.
