I've decided to give up on watching 49er games in hopes of getting a win. I for one, need another reason to look forward to Sundays. It's just too frustrating to watch this team as a whole.
So, for the rest of the season, I will be looking at individual players and maintaining a keep/cut/jury's out list. Knowing what we have and what we should be looking for in the offseason is what I want to focus on.
I won't cover every player. There are plenty of so-so guys that aren't really important in the long term. Here we go....
Keep:
RB Carlos Hyde - Today should have been evidence of what he means to this offense. He's a very talented runner and should be part of our future.
RT Trent Brown - One of the few bright spots this year. He's a legit starter at RT.
LT Joe Staley - We know what we've got here. Doesn't seem to be slowing down and doesn't get injured. He should anchor the LT position for a couple more years.
LG Zane Beadles and C Daniel Kilgore - I hesitated to put our interior OLinemen on this list because they've struggled at times in the running game. But I'm thinking now that is partially because our passing game is utterly terrible.
DE Deforest Buckner - He gets into the backfield and is disruptive. He's improving as a run defender as well.
CB Rashard Robinson - Fragile, but he's our best coverage guy even as a rookie.
CB Jimmy Ward - We need him to get healthy, but before his injury he was solid.
FS Eric Reid - He's been inconsistent. But solid overall. His physical tools and veteran leadership count for a lot and we should resign him.
ILB Navorro Bowman - Sure hope he comes back from this injury. We need him. Still only 28 years old.
Cut:
QB Gabbert and Kaepernick - I've seen enough from both of these guys. Sure, each would be a decent backup. But I'd rather get some fresh blood in here.
TE Celek and McDonald - These guys get way more looks than our WRs. I'm ready to pass judgement. Cut 'em both. McDonald is a bust.
WR Torrey Smith - He hasn't had many looks, but he's also had a lot of drops and he doesn't get open quickly enough. He's a one trick pony and has no business being pair like a #1 WR.
ILB Michael Wilhoite, Nick Belore, Gerald Hodges - These guys all suck. Easily replaced with mid-round draft picks and FAs.
NT Mike Purcell and Glenn Dorsey - These guys also suck. Zero value.
Jury's Out:
OLB Aaron Lynch - Slow start for him after the suspension. But he still looks like a solid edge player. Hard to judge him in the running game though. Teams have so much success running up the middle on us that they don't test the outside much.
DE Arik Armstead - He's inconsistent. Flashes dominance at times. Playing injured.... but still I'd like to see more from him.
WR Quinton Patton and WR Jeremy Kerley - Like Smith, these guys don't get many looks, so it's hard to judge. But unlike Smith, they catch everything thats catchable and they aren't paid like #1 guys. I'd like to see more from both guys. But I suspect that both would make decent #3 or even #2 guys with a better QB and a real #1 guy on the field.
RG Justin Garnett - So far, I'm not impressed. Yes, he's a rookie. But he was a 1st rounder. Of course he will still be around next year and should get at least another season to prove himself. But whether he will/should be part of a winning team remains to be seen.

Why cut Torrey just because he's not a WR1? He's proven he's a decent WR2.

For Baltimore...he's done nothing here. His salary is 22nd in the league for WR's...that's #1 money and his cap hit goes up 3 million next year.

And the 49ers will have over $80 million in cap space including the rollover. He's a nice deep threat that has been a consistently explosive player throughout his NFL career when he's had a QB who could actually get him the football.
Why get rid of him just so you can add a replacement as yet another need. Regardless of whether they keep Torrey or let him go, they still need a #1 WR. This team has plenty of needs as it is without creating new ones.

So because we have the cap room that justifies keeping a WR that is making a ton of money for less than 200 yards receiving after 7 games. Drafting a speed guy that can only run one rout is a lot cheeper than keeping him.

49ers just lack play makers period on the offensive side haven't had a #1 since Owens and man I would kill for a play maker but baalke needs to go to make that happen

How many speed guys get into the NFL and flop? How many speed guys have 1,100 yards receiving as the #1 target on their respective teams?
It appears the 49ers will be drafting a QB, and if that is the case, you want to give your young QB more, not less weapons, especially if you have a veteran receiver who has seen it all, who has been in the playoffs, played in and won a SB. Cap space isn't going to become an issue for a few years and with Torrey you have a guy that defenses will always have to account for.
Just because the current batch of QB's suck badly(Kaepernick missed a wide open Torrey in the endzone today), doesn't mean that a guy they draft won't have a use for Torrey. The 49ers need more, not less good receivers.

Last year was below average for him and this year his play has completely fallen off a cliff. Lets be honest he only had 17 yards today.

The reason I put Torrey on the cut list as opposed to Patton or Kerley is because Torrey has not shown reliable hands. None of our receivers are very good. But they are all playing with the same QBs and Torrey has been worse than Patton and Kerley.

The difference is that neither of those guys has a history of production the way Torrey has. Yeah he's dropped passes, he's also made some huge plays and gotten open for many more that QB's screwed up on. A defense always has to respect Torrey's ability to get open deep.
