If you go by salaries being paid currently in the NFL, the positions of greatest importance are:
QB--7%
DE--5.2%
LB--4.9%
CB--4.7%
WR--4.5
OL--3.6
DT--3.1
RB--3.1
TE--2.8
S--2.8
The fact that QB is so much higher than the others is pretty good evidence it's the most important position.

Punters and kickers must be making a killing, they didn't even want to post the percentage.

"I can't think of another player like Jabrill -- I know there's not another player that I've coached like him" Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said at Monday's press conference. "The unique thing is all the positions he can play.
"You start counting them: It would be safety, corner, nickel, outside linebacker. It would be slot receiver, wildcat quarterback, running back, kick returner, punt returner, gunner, hold-up."

My fault...I just added one place in decimals. If I had gone out a few more places...

I think having a good OL in place is the only thing that must have before you spend a 1st round pick on a QB. Decent receivers would be nice, but not essential to developing a rookie QB. An OL that can keep a QB vertical and give him a little extra time to adjust to the speed of the NFL is critical to developing a young QB.
We've got the OL. Time to draft a QB before Staley retires.

Get the best player available in the draft. Jabrill Peppers..
No bias here, just a little but you can't beat words like never coached a player like...
Sorry but you just can't pass this type of talent up. Time to grow some b-lls and start moving up and getting the players you want on a championship squad. There's like 5-6 Qb's coming out. Get the best players available and your Qb...

You can find another pass rusher or edge rusher. You can't find talent like this often. This kid is special. Agree to disagree.

I believe...a good GM has to recognize talent...especially in the first round. That's what they get paid for. Otherwise you and I can make the picks too.
You can be the best GM ever and still guess wrong on a prospect. In the end all you are doing is making an educated guess and hoping for the best.
Bill Walsh advised the Colts to pass up on Peyton Manning and instead select Brian Griese in the 2nd round.
Mike Shanahan was sold on John Beck being a top caliber QB prospect in the NFL.
Ozzie Newsome dropped a 1st round pick on Kyle Boller.
Its an inexact science and then some.
A team with as many holes and needs as the 49ers had wasnt in any place to blow up 2 drafts for a QB that honestly is about a 50/50 prospect at best. So they played it smart, they built up in the trenches and added a guy that was seen as a Top3 prospect by many.
Kelly also got a chance to evaluate whether or not any of the QBs already on the roster were worthwhile.
Next draft they will be in a better position to invest some more draft capital in acquiring a QB much like how Philly was this year if that is the route they choose.
yup ...and every GM passed on Tom Brady 5 times, until Beli-cheat drafted him in the 6th round, our front office was convinced Giovanni Carmazzi was going to be our QB of the future, and don't get me started on Jim Druckenmiller and nobody used a draft pick on Kurt Warner ? ...a QB isn't guaranteed success, just because he is drafted in the first or second round round .....LOL ..I had forgotten about Walsh advising the Colts to take Brian Griese instead of Peyton , at least they didn't take Ryan Leaf

Im going to say WR. We've had a severe lack of speed for years now which is causing our qbs to have to hold on to the ball for too long resulting in sacks or dbs jumping routes. We need 6'4 fast guy. Like that dude we had in 2012, when we went to the superbowl. Either that or a Kelvin Benjamin type. We need to throw some bombs every now and then even if we think they wont work but the guys we have now have little to no chance of making big plays like that.

New England passed on Brady at least once in the 6th round too. He was their second or third pick in the round.

The guys they have now have little to no chance because they just arent very good QBs. Throwing a top receiver into the mix wont change that.
The Cards had young, in their prime Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, two HOF caliber receivers and that team was still garbage until Kurt Warner came along.
A QB that struggles with their accuracy, cant read a defense and is just overall inconsistent wont suddenly become a great QB because you give him a dominant WR. Jay Cutler has been a pretty mediocre QB in Chicago even with the additions of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery at WR.
To say that you can make a mediocre quarterback better by giving them a dominant receiver to me is like claiming that all a crappy pitcher in baseball needs is a badass catcher. Why not just get a better pitcher?

Good points, but... ...I'm not sure it's getting through! Just seems logical the guy who starts every play with the ball in his hands is slightly more important than the guy who will be vital to ten to fifteen percent of the plays. On top of that, how many elite QBs come out each year versus elite WRs? I would argue it is a very lopsided comparison in favor of WRs.
