The ONLY thing that needs to happen this year is getting clarity on the QB position. We need to know, for a fact, that Kap is the guy or Gabbert is the guy, or neither is the guy. Each are equally great answers. We just need to know with certainty.
The worst thing that can happen this season is we walk into February with another "I dunno yet" at the QB position.

The best approach for the coaches and management might be to treat this as a developmental year, like an extended pre-season where they continue to experiment and develop players without trying to shoot for the playoffs. If they could come to the end of the year solidifying certain positions knowing exactly what they had to do in the off season to have shot at the playoffs, that might be optimal for this team.
If we try to win the maximal number of games instead of looking at player/position development as the most important goal.

Right, I get that, but what could unexpectedly go right this season, you see no potential for anything to change our fortunes? What if Buckner plays like a mad man, and is rookie of the year, or the O=line is dominant? Maybe Hyde doesn't get injured, and puts up 1500 yard rushing, and 300 receiving...you see no hope, none, not even a sliver?
Hope you weren't expecting a response to your request of him adding anything of value when it comes to a football discussions
Anyways, despite our schedule appearing to be brutal, I do think there is hope with this team. The coaching staff is worlds better, the OL looks so much better and the defense could be a surprise. If Tank can become the pass rusher we thought we were getting in the draft and Eli can turn the corner a bit, I think our defense can be middle of the pack. Combine that with an offense that I expect will score points, a 10 win season isn't nearly as far fetched as it appeared to be about 4 months ago.
Naw man, what I was looking for was for people to try and come up with quotes from talking heads, when they are wrong.
So, Like Paul Guterierrez at ESPN has us with four wins, just try to imagine :
1) Why we might find ourselves 5-3 mid season and looking to go an a roll.
2) What the douche bags would be saying,
So, now its time for Paul Guterierrez, to eat s**t, so he says, "I never saw this coming, I can't believe the niners _______ is so good, it has really turned their season around, and made me look like the ass hat I am"

It shouldn't stun you.
Look who you're dealing with.
People who will be negative no matter what.
I would lay odds that even if we won the Super Bowl - they'd be whinning about something.
It's just how they are.
lulz, there is a difference between optimism and being realistic. Last year's thread where you predict the number of wins - people thought 10-11 wins. Some folks said we would be lucky to win 6 games and got roasted for saying it, for not being good fans, etc.
How did that work out?
There weren't many people who thought we were going to win 10 games after the offseason unfolded. When I made my bet with Reign, I was under the assumption that Willis, Borland, A. Davis, Aldon Smith would be on our team. I also thought Cowboy might come back for one last rodeo. Then errbody retired. So a lot of the negative Nancies, while correct, made their predictions far before the roster got blown up.
Also, everybody thinks of themselves as a realist. From your perspective your a realist and I'm a homer, from my perspective, I'm a realist and your a hater (not you specifically). But as anything in life, the truth lies somewhere between. Some years the sky is falling crowd gets it right (see 2015) and some years the Everything-is-awesome crowd gets it right (see 2011 and 2016 ).
I consider myself an optimist and have predicted we go 7-9. This team is on the upswing from last year, I have no doubt, yet the perception that we are going to be even worse this year (worst team in the league no less) is now the consensus among the "realists" you speak of.
Good post Amp!!
The glass is half full/empty scenario.
I'm w/you.
I'm an optimist for the most part.
Big difference between a Homer and an optimist.
Guys who aren't cutting it should be canned - like Martin, Deavy
If some can turn it around and improve the team's performance or depth than great - like Tank and maybe Brandon.

Simply due to the schedule.
It's pretty brutal. If it goes according to prediction (anywhere from 0-5 to 2-3 is possible IMO). Big injuries to Opponents Starters makes everything possible, but if they stay healthy, we are facing a bunch of very good Teams to start the year. Cowboys are the big variable, but Panthers, Seahawks, and Cardinals are all SB caliber Teams.
Gottta win the first game against LA (tough to remember to say that), or it could get ugly in the Zone.
Agree
If we don't get blown out, I think we've done well.
NOT great but improvement in all areas then I have something to look forward to.

i think our team will get better but we are no way ready to compete for playoff spot yet
i think our record may be worse this year but i have no doubt we will have a better team

The media is slow to react. They have their points though, its a until you prove it deal, However, I am optimistic, our biggest complaint about the OL is what will make for the best combo of players to field, unlike last year, when everyone was whining why we didn't sign a FA or draft someone or cut the bum (at least not as loud this year).
The biggest thing on Defense is the MLB spot next to Nav. and will the front seven provide enough pressure, we know they will, but enough worthy of a playoff team.
The biggest reason thought that media is down on us still, is that on paper, we have the most brutal schedule. How successful will depend on health, not just us, but people we play as well as how the ball bounces.

For the start of the season:
0-4 "well that sucks, how are the college qbs this year"
1-4 "bad but that is a rough starting sch."
2-2 "glad we stole one there"
3-1 "payoff?"
4-0
