I honestly feel there is more talent on this team than there was on the 2014 team. I'm not sure that you can say it's the same DL. We have upgrade quite a bit.
They were better starting off offensively with an OL that aside from Kilgore had been together for years. Better at WR with a QB coming off a good season.
This year they have talent on the OL but no chemistry with likely 4 new starters from a year ago. Talent on OL is one thing but its paramount that guys are in sync with each other all the way, particularly when it comes to zone blocking. Baltimore took a year to get everyone on the same page despite having largely the same OL that they won a SB with. There will be ups and downs.
Borland was better than anyone not named Bowman at ILB on this current roster.
They wont have Lynch for 4 games, four very tough games.
The QB situation is a mess with nobody resembling an NFL caliber starter.
In short, this team will be better than last years team and there will be progress but they probably dont win many more games. It was always going to be a multiple offseason rebuild and going into the next offseason they will need to find a franchise QB, some more weapons on offense, an ILB and more depth at OLB.

Kap has the sky's the limit ability but he must prove to be a professional in terms of handling situations and applying the offense as well.
If Gabbert was anything like 2012 Alex Smith, Kelly would be doing cartwheels across the field right now. Gabbert more resembles a 2009 Alex Smith.

i think 2007 alex smith - the one playing with a broken shoulder
but seriously i think gabbert gives us the best chance to win but at his best he is alex smith with jimmy raye calling the plays

Just imagine if we actually had a serviceable QB's like
Andrew Luck
Blake Bortles
Matthew Stafford
Philip Rivers
Teddy Bridgewater
This team could easily become an instantly 11+ win team. Seems we do have enough depth through the roster to make sum noise this year.
Too bad we are stuck with mediocre QB's on the roster this season.

Blake Bortles

So far this preseason, the Niner offense has put up over 300 yards and over 400 yards. We'll see, but it looks to me like this team can be productive on offense with any of the QB's on the roster. And BTW, what is the point of listing a bunch of QB's you'd rather have? So what?

Not to beat a dead horse, but with proper talent and coaching, Kap has done more than all of those QBs
I'm not saying Kap is the answer or he will do great things with us, just that he's already proven he can take a team further than any of those QBs you listed.

I am not sure if I agree if we do a player by player breakdown. I think the only edge the 2014 OL has on the 2016 OL is Iupati at LG. The 2014 OL was horrible at pass protection. Chemistry does not make up for pass protection suckage.
OL
Staley, Garnett vs Iupati, Kilgore, A. Davis vs Boone, Brown vs A. Davis -- I would give the edge to A. Davis at RG since Boone did have some consistency issues and Davis is moving from a tougher position to an easier one. As for Iupati, one could possibly say that his pass blocking was subpar and Garnett may have the edge on that.
DL
AA vs Ray McDonald -- from what has been said about AA now, I think he plays stronger in 2016 than Ray did in 2014.
Purcell vs Dorsey -- obviously Dorsey
DeFo vs J. Smith -- no contest with Smith here
OLB
Lynch vs Lynch
Ray Ray vs Borland -- Borland due to the stats but let's see how Ray Ray does here as Borland was weak in coverage where Ray Ray will make up in
Bowman vs Bowman
Brooks vs Brooks/Carradine
DB
2016 DB's are easily stronger than the 2014 DB
The main position of advantage for the 2014 team would be WR with #2 Crabtree being better than any of our #2's. The 2014 team went 8-8 with one of the worst pass blocking in the league. I can't stress how much the 2015 offseason/coaching clusterf**k did our team in. Think we will easily pass 2015 win total by 3 wins.

The fact that Pears was starting last season and probably can't even crack the 2nd team on this squad should tell everybody something important about the current team.

I was just thinking to myself wishing upon a star. That it would be nice to have a legit QB on the team rather then wait another year for a possible replacement. A guy can wish can he? jeez!!!

Oh s**t. I felt movement in the pants reading about Beadles giving a go at Center.

If this happens, can we put Garnett at guard? Or will it definitely be Kilgore?
