We've got Torrey Smith. That's it.
While I didn't think WR would be a top target in the Draft, I thought it could and should have worked its way into the mid-rounds. Now we only have one true starting caliber WR who basically isn't too dimensional beyond streaking downfield.
Has Baalke admitted he has no idea what to do at the position? Is Trent very-wishfully thinking that Kelly can get guys who've largely underwhelmed (Patton, Ellington) to get better production with whatever QB they roll out there?

That's probably the case. With as many holds as we had in our roster I'm completely fine with drafting the way they did. Gotta start in the trenches. I also have more faith in chip getting production out of guys like Patton and Ellington then I do O'Neil getting production from guys like Acker and reaser.Originally posted by NinerPrideinNJ:We've got Torrey Smith. Y WR (SLOT): Bruce Ellington (143); Aaron Burbridge (0), DeAndrew White (30) & DiAndre Campbell (0)
Z WR: DeAndre Smelter (0); Quinton Patton (424), Dres Anderson (0) & Eric Rogers (0)

Yeah...our WR situation is pretty bleak. Hopefully Chip can scheme guys to get open and maybe utilize the talent better. But we have a semi #1 and a bunch of 4's with maybe a 3 in there. Not good. We'll be running a lot.

How exactly did you come to the conclusion that we "have torrey smith and that's it"?
not sure if you noticed, but we had a QB who couldn't get passed one read, and when he did, he couldn't throw with anticipation, touch or accuracy. that means everyone aside from the primary read is on the field for no reason. FFS, we had Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson and Michael Crabtree...it still wasn't enough.
also, we had coaches that prioritized tight ends over wide receivers.
was it bruce ellington and his blistering 19 targets for the entire year that helped you come to this conclusion?

Yup. It seems like Chip has a mixed bag of WRs to work with: some are big, some go deep, some are shifty, some get YAC.
I assume the ground game is the first order of business this season. They'll probably let Chip mix and match at WR, then re-evaluate and adjust next offseason.

If you honestly believe this then
Chip and Trent have had these discussions throughout this offseason. Appears they opted to not really do much here for the time being. The head coach and GM are working together, believe it or not.
Perhaps through the summer or into preseason and regular season they will feel a need to make a move. Maybe that move comes through street FA's, a trade or from roster cuts through TC's and preseason. Or perhaps they roll with what they have for this year.

Between Torrey, Smelter, and Burbridge, plus the holdovers, we will be fine at WR. Remember this is Chip Kelly's passing offense, not the anemic unoriginal crap we had during 2011-2015.

Sorry, those are last year's snap counts. 1,000-1,100 snaps is usually a full time player.
Needless to say, with so few snaps last year from this crew, who knows what we really have.

I think they are going to give our guys a chance to separate themselves. Could also be waiting to see who get's cut after training camp, picking up another teams garbage.
