Plan? There is none. What you see is what you get. Brace yourself for another losing season.
Tell you dad, once Baalke is fired at the end of the season, may be the new GM will finally do something.

The 49ers had the reputation of an organization that players didn't want to play for due to the front office well before this off-season started. It was obvious that a complete culture change was needed the same way it was needed when Harbaugh was hired. So what does Jed do? Retains Trent Baalke first and foremost which IMO was also his first mistake of THIS offseason. Hes made plenty prior to this but that's been discussed. Okay, so Baalke gets another shot. Thats fine. He could still right the ship and shed this reputation of a dysfunctional organization that players don't want to play for by hiring a respected head coach that players want to play for but no.
He compounds the problem by hiring a head coach that also has the same reputation. Mistake #2. Now that the new league year has started he has one more shot to make some noise for the team by making a splash in free agency. Yes over paying free agent players isn't ideal but something had to be done to create some buzz for the team and fans and show the players that there is something worth playing for. It's not like there aren't gaping holes throughout his roster that need to be filled. 2 birds with one stone. Instead we roll status quo and strike 3.
Regardless of what the anti fa armchair GMs in here say, overpaying a couple big name players for the sake of player and fan support while filling a roster need was not going to cripple the teams financial future. The cap space was there to overcome it. Thisteam's has always been creative with player contracts.
Firing Harbaugh, retaining Baalke and hiring Kelly more than likely will end up setting this franchise back a decade.

Harbaugh wasn't liked by players. Ask Jay Glazer.

There's no plan. Despite Niners might be pretending saving money to gain compensatory picks for future drafts, truth is their image as franchise is ruined and not even money is gonna save them for oblivion. Just like Browns, Niners have tough time finding players willing to come and play after their owner and front office turned into shreds the franchise from top to bottom. While Haslam has chance to grab a decent QB at 2nd overall pick and being groomed by Jackson, Niners horizon just look gloomier each day pass without a decent free agent prospect signed by this incompetent front office.

This article on a Takeo Spikes interview makes sense about the reason free agents have not come here. Basically Colin not wanting to play for the team and Chips questionable relationship with players. I have to agree. I think there was a plan for free agency but now I think they winging it since no one wants to sign.

While I had hoped we could sign an OL linemen or two, unless you are winning, you will end up ridiculously over paying for players and despite those that want to FEEL like the niners are doing something. I Would prefer that the niners don't overpay. Every notable and qualified former executives have said that while on paper teams like the Raiders look good on paper, the first week is when teams over pay ridiculously and majority of the time teams pay for it and the player turns out not to be worth their weight in gold, not even close.
Even when they are good, teams still release these players before there contract is even halfway up. Cases in point where they were outrageously paid and were not worth their weight in gold except for maybe the PR they brought were Suh and Williams.
I still hold out that we will get some Rogers type players as it is still early and after the draft, if some teams feel they got the players they want, there will be those who cut/release others.
The niners have tried to go after people contrary to what others have speculated, but were simply outbid. That is why I think that the long term plan is to shore up the D, if Kelly can get the D going, that will lead to others wanting to come here. Especially if Kelly can create a workable Stop gap measure at QB. Like Foles was in Philly.

It's the same plan that we have always had. Build through the draft and supplement through free agency. Of course in doing this you need to also rely on good coaching of those draft picks.

The plan better be to sign a few free agents out of the bargain bin and then kill it in the draft. If that doesn't happen, all you trolls will have a new GM to hate next offseason.

Pretty accurate assessment PA. We shall find out directly which, if any at all, of the things above happen. That said, i am still stunned we didn't sign one impact player in FA. Lord knows we needed one in every category, except NT which was done with re-signing. But OT, OG, OC, OLB, DE...even ILB....nada, On this team, holes everywhere, one would have thot we sign at least one. Nope.
