I'll reserve a real comment till after they play Carolina, and Cam. I like what they showed tonight though, no penalties, lined up in the right position, swarming to the ball basically no missed tackles.

Agreed. Still don't love our talent at MLB or in the middle of the DLine but we were fast and swarmed. There were always at least 4 guys around the ball carrier all night. Loved the blitzes, stopped the run, CBs were solid. Let's keep it up.

This .... it's not like Keenum had time.
Exactly. Someone asked in the game day thread why aren't the Rams taking deep shots? If the Rams OC had Keenum throwing deep, we would've seen a Mortal Kombat style fatality out there. That defense was all over him.
Agreed. Well called game by Jim and well executed by the defense. Rams aren't a good offensive team but it's hard to pitch a shutout in the NFL vs anybody. Great game!
Our offense in some seasons has proven that. Somehow we'd always at least get in FG position. I was surprised the Rams didn't because I figured no way we could hold this up.
They got in FG range once after the game had already been decided and opted to go for it on 4th down.

It seemed as though he played a lot more zone coverage than I ever remember from watching his CLE defense. If this is true, I think it's because they want more eyes on Gurley so that the CBs can get involved in the run defense. In the first half, nearly every blitz he dialed up resulted in a free rusher at Keenum. OL protection for the Rams was confused.

That is a good adjustment. Keenum and their WRs were no threat at all.

GLAD to say that it was the LAMBS.. in boxing, this was a warm up match... our Defense looked very active... if Ward can stay healthy, he will be an ALL PRO this year.. even when he isn't making the tackles, he would throw his body around in order to disrupt those OL..
The secondary did their job, but lets not get too excited... Lambs QB is a NOBODY...
Tartt is freakin shredder.. and that's what I will call him from now on.. THE SHREDDER !!! did you all see when the kick or punt returner was trying to stiff arm him.. Tartt gave him one of those SUH like QB (Cutler) sack !!
The defensive PLAN was really great, and you can tell by the substitution package..
LAST but not the least, Tank just isn't an OLB (as I've been saying all 3 years long).. he's a dead body when it comes to coverage.. and he belongs in a 4-3 scheme.

Oneil was confusing me with his front 4-7 alignments. I was seeing a few guys acting in different roles. Can't wait for the breakdowns!

Barrows with the good snap count breakdown of the defense: http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article101553082.html
I thought this was telling of how the team will scheme pass protection:
"The 49ers used two looks for their nickel packages. One involved sending in an extra safety, Jaquiski Tartt, which allowed Eric Reid to play along the line of scrimmage. Tartt played 16 snaps; Reid and Antoine Bethea played all 61. Another look sent Jimmie Ward to nickel from outside cornerback. In those cases, rookie Rashard Robinson played on the outside. He played 25 snaps."

We'll be running a lot of 4-3 this year... Look for him to be a dark horse key/breakout player week 2.

Safety Eric Reid was texting defensive coaches at 11 pm last night wanting to know game plan specifics. 49ers players are loving this scheme.

4-3 or more of a old school 3-4 that we ran in the 80's and 90's where we had a roaming pass rusher.

It worked out great on monday...still too soon to tell. I love that he calls an aggressive game plan but that could hurt us if we're trying to come from behind.
