Hardy Nickerson, a former five-time Pro Bowl linebacker out of Cal, has been hired as the 49ers linebackers coach, Fox Sports reported Saturday.

Nickerson, 50, held the same role on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff the past two years, after coaching at Bishop O'Dowd High-Oakland from 2010-13.

Nickerson's son, Hardy Nickerson Jr., was Cal's leading tackler this season as a junior linebacker, and he helped lead Bishop O'Dowd to Hayward Area Athletic League titles in 2010 and 2011 under his dad.

Minor clarification to @alexmarvez tweet. Source said Hardy Nickerson will coach ILBs. Jason Tarver will do OLBs and/or DC.

Good guy, great LB, and excellent LB coach. How can Hardy not be a hit here?

And as a bonus, he is a local and fan favorite here. Way to go Chip. This is starting to look like the antithesis to tomsula....and boy do we ever need it. Professionalism on the 49ers?
