I'm actually interested to know what kind of run game concepts Modkings talked about with Chip during his interview. Chip chose this guy because he feels that Modkins adds certain things to his offense that Chip wants. So I'm actually pretty excited as to what wrinkles this guy brings to the offense, even though Chip is still the coordinator.

Chip needs a more expansive run-game applied around his offense. He's tunneled into what he knows which is why we were looking for some of the best run coordinator types.
It really seems like Chip is putting himself in position to allow good coaches who are on the outside looking in to point out/improve weaker aspects of his offense.

Modkins has handled this sort of role before under Chan Gailey who called all his own plays. Modkins handled the run game, and Buffalo's rushing attack improved every single year. His focus with the 49ers will be the same I imagine.
Makes sense...with Modkins, Flaherty & Wolford, that pretty much covers the expertise in pass protection, power AND zone blocking scheme. What's cool about Kelly's running game, is that while he runs a lot of inside zone, most is power 1on1 inside with the G's...hence, Modkins and Flaherty.

There's run guyeeez who do not understand the passing game or don't highly value the passing game and then there's run guyeeez who can improve an offense by installing the run to work within the current passing philosphy. DET had a pass heavy style and Modkings was able to incorporate the run within that style.
Roman, on the other hand, isn't able to do this and the pass severely suffers.

He's been with Chan Gailey forever. Zone based scheme all day, attacking the field horizontally, creative running plays, quick passing, get the ball out to your RB's and TE's in space....etc. Seems like he'd be a good fit with Kelly.

I'm just happy they are hiring coaches that make sense into what we want to do with the offense rather than picking up a crap OL coach who has crapped everywhere trying to run Man and Zone blocking during the offseason.

Maybe because Rathman is content as a RB's coach? If he was looking for anymore than that, and teams thought he was suited for anymore than that, it would have happened awhile ago.
