2016 Needs?

Shop Find 49ers gear online
Draft and Free Agent needs will be determined over the next five games so it might be a good time to start evaluating who the 49ers have in hand versus what they need.

Offensive Roster as it stands for next year--
*QB: Gabbert, Kaepernick, Thompson (trade/cut)
*RB: Hyde, Davis (Draughn—resign?)
*TE: McDonald, Bell, Anderson (Celek—resign?)
*WR: T Smith, Ellington, Patton, Smelter, Anderson, White (Boldin—resign)
*OT: Staley, Brown, Pears
*OG: Thomas, Silberman, Tiller, (Boone, Devey—either? Both?)
*OC: Kilgore, Martin

Current offensive hierarchy of needs—a lot depends on who falls to them where.
1--QB (1st round if Gabbert folds, later if he does well, FA vet)
2--OC (high priority and it may lessen the need for two OGs. Would like them to draft a starter and move Martin to OG)
3--OG (high priority as they have two guys signed next year and no good prospects)
4--OT (depends on Brown and resigning Boone, high priority)
5--WR (high pick or forget it…they have enough mediocrity)
6–RB (backup, mid-round)
7--TE (if they resign Celek they may be good to go)

Defensive Roster as it stands for next year--
DL: Armstead, Dorsey, Purcell, Dial (Williams-resign)
ILB: Bowman, Hodges, Skov, Bellore (Wilhoite-resign?)
OLB: Lynch, Brooks, Harold, Lemonier (Armstrong-resign?)
S: Reid, Bethea, Ward, Tartt, McCray
CB: Brock, Acker, Johnson, Reaser,Cromartie, Davis (thanks AB!)

Current defensive hierarchy of needs—impact players needed, so high picks or...
1--OLB (1st, 2nd and FA; can't win without pressure on the QB)
2--ILB (if Hodges can become a viable starter it becomes a lower need)
3--DL (always need big bodies!)

Special Teams--no needs for specialists (camp fodder)
K: Dawson (fixed, thanks to Hysterikal)
P: Pinion
LS: Nelson

Nice post. Should post it twice!

If I knew how I would! LOL!
Either you are suggesting Kenneth Acker learns to be a kicker or forgot we have Phil Dawson not Acker anymore. And why is Center such a high priority if Kilgore is back then he can be a good starter.

Thanks! I'll edit that...though it could save us a spot...hmmm...
We need

a. o line

b. a QB

C. CBs

D. Coaches

E. a new GM

f. LB depth

g. D line help

h. shade on the stands

i. new coaches

j. drafts without injured players.

Not much if you ask me.
And Dawson's contract is up so you either resign a ancient kicker or draft/sign a new replacement

I might be higher on Gabbert than I should be, but I really don't want to get caught not having a replacement for Staley.

1. OT
2. OLB: Lynch needs a running mate. Maybe Harold/Tank is that guy, but I want a good player here, not just a 'good enough' player.
3. WR: Boldin needs a replacement, not confident it is Patton/Smelter.
4. DE: A bit let down by Dial this season. I might have overrated him going into the season. He's still on the upswing, but Dorsey will be gone most of next season and is old. Tank is no longer a DE.
5. QB: can go higher if a good prospect somehow falls and the 49ers get good value in the draft. Otherwise I'm okay rolling with Gabbert to see if he continues his development.

I hope DE or OLB can be fulfilled via FA because an impact player there can really boost the defense. The team should splurge on a front 7 free agent. Boone is okay, but I like his pissy attitude. An OL needs some of that. He should be retained if the price is decent.
DE : Derek Wolfe or Muhammed Wilkerson
OLB : Tamba Hali or Bruce Irvin
ILB : Derrick Johnson or Rolando McClain

Splurge away Trent some real potential free agents

They will likely extend him or take a late round kicker, but FAs are available and Baalke has been able to find kickers. Not WRs or OL but kickers and DBs he can find.

Agree with these for the most part. I like Gabbert as well and believe he will be the starting QB next year, so either they draft a young guy to develop, a FA vet who is solid or both. Not sure what they would do if a top QB fell to them in the first round...jump on it? Probably.

Dial is likely a career backup but he may be a solid guy for years in that spot. They really miss the impact aspect of J Smith...even Armstead won't be that kind of DL...not many are. How many DL make game saving tackles thirty yards down the field? LOL! But they are at least stable at DL.

They need impact players, not more depth at most positions...OL being the exception--where they need both. This is why it's so important how the draft breaks. Staley is the only guy signed for next year who is a legitimate NFL lineman. Kilgore can be solid but can they depend on him? I really want to see a 2/3 round OC drafted to make this a position of strength and depth. Kilgore can play OG so it would not be any reflection of his value.

Baalke has used FAs to fill immediate needs so I expect a FA OT, OG and perhaps an OC as well. Can't imagine going into training camp with the same situation and only rookies to add.

I didn't want to get into the GM/Coaching! That will likely clear itself up over the next five games. If they struggle and do not show improvement against these mostly weak opponents...
Excellent post!

OLine tops the list, IMO.

Instead of moving Martin to Guard - let's move him to another team and free up a roster spot.

Move Kilgore to RG and sign Mack as a FA to play Center. Kilgore could then be the back-up Center and would play at a high level if needed.

I think Boone will be too expensive and will test FA.

We MUST get a quality guy behind Staley who is ready to play ASAP. I think Boone could do it BUT the question is will the FO?

There are other FA "proven" guys who are young enough to play Tackle and give us some years to develop a quality replacement.

I'm really hoping Trent Brown can develop into a RT.

We need good OL, and a running back that won't get hurt every game.

Thanks!

Even if Brown does become a solid OT the team needs at least one more. If Boone leaves they will be very thin. I'm wondering if Thomas could be a tweener type eventually for depth. As for Martin, he is still very young and has room to develop but the clock is ticking...at least for the niners. If they get a solid OC in FAcy, as we both hope they do, then Martin will need to improve a great deal to earn a spot.

At times I want the entire draft to be OL! LOL! Huge hole in the team that has to be fixed in order to be a legitimate offense.
