Ok, I'm not a doctor and I have not had a torn labrum, but I did have surgery for a torn rotator cuff, it sucked big time. I did know a very successful HS pitcher that had a torn labrum on his pitching arm. Doctors told him he could have surgery or play through it. He decided to play through it. Fast forward, he pitches 4 years in college and was the closer at a big time D1 college. He was drafted and has done well so far in the minors. Never had the surgery but still has discomfort. Doctors apparently told him he couldn't injure his shoulder any worse by continuing to pitch.

What does all this mean. Well Kap injured his non throwing shoulder and really, if he felt inclined to live with discomfort, he could bypass the surgery. In other words, if he was still playing, there is no doubt he would have put this surgery off or not had it at all. Not really sure who's choice it was to have the surgery, but the timing was elective and suspect.

Since when do pitchers get hit by 300 lb linemen after every throw ?
