We all knew this year would be a year full of rocky bumps and some surprising moments,
I for one am not worried about all the yards we gave up, it is a young team, and you knew sooner or later a smart offensive team would take advantage of communication breakdowns. hopefully it can be fixed and we can right the ship.. last week we got saved from the PI call on Bethea (or what should have been) when he was playing shallow. we don't have safeties with 4.3 speed so we may need to play them back a bit. We have not given up this many 40+ yard completion in several games, let alone in one game.. today there were 4 or 5!!!!
What I am really worried about is Eric Reid's ability to play deep centerfield. He is one of the famous 9ers to be drafted last 4 years by baalke (including Armstead, Ward, Aj Jenkins, Reid). When he came out, I read how he takes wrong steps and gets himself out of position. then there was the seattle seahawk game in conference championship where he inexcusably allowed Lynch to Juke him for 40 yard touchdown. Past few years, I watched how he comes up strong in run support and stopping short passes, but gravely misjudges long passes and does not seem to place himself well for success on deep passes. today i almost wanted to vomit to see the play where Antonio Brown almost scored on him... he made Reid look stupid twice.
I just hope we can have him close to LOS and use him as safety/ LB combo defender guarding TEs and RBs than depending on him to help cover speedy WRs on deep passes. Should we look at moving on and using Ward ???

To me, and I'd have to go back and watch (which I don't really feel like doing), it looked like Reid was playing more of the SS role and Bethea was at FS
I do have a problem with the Reid blitzes, he's just too slow and not physical enough to get there, I'd much rather see Bethea, Brock, Tartt, and probably even Ward on those blitzes

We are tiring out our safeties by having them go back and forth lining up close to the line of scrimmage then running back to cover

Our zone coverage is horrible right now. Im curious to see jonny del's breakdown of the chunk plays to see if the problem was scheme, blown coverage, or just sorry play. Our pass rush seemed nonexistant, thats probably a huge part of it too.

49ers defense is in trouble because in the past we could bring pressure with the front four Ray Mac Justin Aldon and Ahmad, well only Ahmad is left and he's washed up so there is ZERO pressure without blitzing. i.e. 6-10 here we come and a new REGIME HC/GM please.

If all we need is a pass rusher why do we have to blow up the whole staff and front office? Lol

True, his timed speed on the 40 does not translate to the field.
there were three deep passes for instance tonight that went Abrown's way, where reid was not even looking for the ball but was hoping to make contact with body. One time was late and Abrown caught first down, second time Reid jarred ball loose (if he had gone for the interception and had good field positioning, could have probably had it), and the third pass was caught by Brown and tackled at the 2 yard line. one other play that Brown caught TD, Reid was in quarters where he was supposed to defend corner area but completely let Brown get wide open. Could see his body language that he played that wrong.
these are just 4 plays today, but demonstrate that Reid may become liability. He is not getting younger or faster either...

Both Reid and Bethea were poor today. With the inexperience at cornerback the safety play has to be solid. It wasn't.

Reid didn't even look like he was trying today. Running, er, jogging half speed at most.

No, dont cut them, they have no hope with no pass rush. Shoulda kept Aldon til something better came along.

I said before the season the lack of pass rush was going to bite them in the ass against good QBs ...today was my worst fear of how that might look. ZERO pressure and Ben just picked them apart. Coupled with piss poor safety play and it was a recipe for disaster .
