Only to the point where they're not interfering with the team. Sure, I'd love all of the athletes that I root for to be great guys too, but that's just not how it works, and that's okay. But as we know all too well, there's a point where bad character turns into suspensions and can make waste of a good plan. It's hard to go with a contingency plan when your OLBs are catching charges in August, for example.

To an extent. Can't be fielding a team of criminals and we can't be fielding a team of classy guys who suck.

After a sack...
It was great pity, so it was,
That villanous saltpetre should be digg'd
Out of the bowels of the harmless earth,
Which many a good tall fellow had destroy'd
So cowardly; and but for these vile guns
He would himself have been a soldier.

Yes I do care because the one's who are doing things off the field that they should not be doing will eventually be caught and cut.

Not looking for choir boys, but don't want those who are numb nuts and to stupid avoid trouble either...
Still, its hard to judge a player's character, it is as elusive as getting a player that has that intangible talent,

i didnt for the most part because we had that stretch under nolan and sing where our guys were soft as f**k but with all these legal issues lately we need to start doin background checks lol. a good balance is necessary, we need some badasses but mostly dudes who are solid. sprinkle in a few thugs here and there and we should be good but dont over do it lol

Would prefer if they were all Steve Young type of character, but if you have a few shady guys I can live with it. The problem is the shady guys keep getting kicked off the team or don't live up to potential. Aldon Smith will go down as the biggest waste of talent ever unless he has some sort of incredible turnaround with someone else.

Only to the extent that it impacts whether or not they are on the field (can't play if you're suspended). To that end, unless someone has a long history of serious legal violations or substance abuse that may be a predictor of being a repeat offender, then I say put the best players on the field. Character is too vague a standard for me. One man's character is another man's jackass. Top 53 we can get our hands on, I say.

Here's how i look at it. This is my damn team, i represent this team to the fullest, i'd do a lot to be part of this organization.
For how much time and money i put into this team, and fanhood,
I expect who ever puts on our uniform to be some what classy, Noones perfect, and ppl make mistakes.
but if you are a complete mess up and don't care about the team, and jus want the money, i got no respect for you.
You can do what you want clearly, and i don care if they smoke weed, because who doesn't now a days,
But if you rape, kill, hit, or jus bein completely careless about your career or the team, you will not get support from me.
I don't support POS's.
Good thread BTW

Football is entertainment for me, I want to see my team win games. What the players do off the field doesnt mean a thing to me. I care about seeing victories on Sundays.
Do you have kids frozen? Just curious.

LA9erfan, we saw this thru the same prism. One other thing. Bad apples can influence others. hence if you have a troublemaker, you can get other guys involved who would have been otherwise ok. So there is another reason for keeping bad seeds off the team.
The aldon thing. Krapt, that was just so incredibly bad for us teamwise. And it also is why DUIs do matter....esp if recurrent.

I agree. I think being an idiot off the field eventually has a negative effect on the field. If these guys care about the team, care about their teammates, care about their play and care about themselves as a person they don't do stupid crap off the field. Charles Barkley be damned, professional athletes are role models whether they like it or not. It really just comes down to what kind of player and person they want to be. If they want to bring their idiotic thug life to the NFL game with them, they need to understand that those actions will shorten their career. Its often said that management doesn't care about the players, well the players union cares even less. For that union it ends at money. The only part of the head injury scenario that the league cares about is the money aspect. They care less about player health. One goes down he will be replaced. The union and its player see the players as parts in a machine, just like team management yet management gets crucified for being that way. The players today seem to be a microcosm of society where the mantra is get what you can while you can for yourself, do what you want, if you get caught blame it on something societal, ask for forgiveness, hope you get it, then do it again. Its about me, myself and I.

That's a good point. There are a lot of people who will follow stronger personalities, regardless of how they act. This is especially true when you're young. Agreed on the DUI's as well. I generally believe it to be true that if you get busted for a DUI, there were probably 10-20+ other times where you were driving drunk and didn't get caught. It's usually indicative of a pattern of behavior rather than an isolated incident.
