That is based on a guess at who is likely to be on the roster come seasons start.

I know money doesn't always tell the full story but its a pretty good indicator. If money tells the story we should be a fairly explosive Offense with a struggling Defense.

5th lowest D - Ouch!

I guess when Aldon gets his deal that will change
After this year Davis and Boldin will clear out 14 million from the offensive side. It's basically just a combination of having two high quality vets on what are functionally the last years of their deals, and Kaepernick having a 15 million dollar cap hit in his first year with the big money boys.

On the defensive side of the ball the first and fourth most expensive players on the 9ers D have both retired in the last two months, one totally unexpectedly, and the other who they had left room for to come back. Patrick Willis would have been +8.5 million on the defensive side, and Justin Smith would have been 6.5 It would be weird if we weren't on the cheaper side of the table for defense immediately following both of those retirements.

Edit: Also, by the end of training camp Kicker/Punter is going to drop from the most expensive to 9th or 10th most expensive when Pinion replaces Lee. Even if they sign a FA to replace Dawson after this year (this is the last and most expensive year of his deal) after this season the 9ers will be towards the bottom or middle for Punter/Kicker spending.

Nice find.

Vernon and Boone are way overpaid.

Dawson at 4 mil? Is that a misprint?
The defensive figures don't really tell the true story...not when you figure Willis, Justin, RayMac are gone now. All of their cap figures were significant. The other side of the coin is your offense will typically have more higher salaried players...QB, WR, RB, TE, OT, etc.
Kaepernick's salary, the end
