The 49ers never asked for anyones signing bonus back. Why are you trying to paint them as greedy? Borland returned his signing bonus willingly. Willis and Smith got to keep their out of common sense.

I don't think FO audacity has anything to do with it...the bonus money "left on the table" is rightfully that of the Niners. That said, given Justin's legacy as a Niner, they may well reach some sort of agreement with him, as they've apparently done with Willis. Players of that ilk are different than say a Borland, who retired after just one season. I'm not sure there's any kind of blueprint for heralded veterans like Justin...so, it'll likely be some kind of mutual agreement, which sounds right and just to me.
