I posted this in another thread and thought it might be worth it's own.
The 49ers are running out of numbers to issue. Do we stop using 21 and 52 now as well? 94? We've already stopped using 97 despite not officially retiring the number. Where do we draw the line?
Numbers should enter semi-retirement in my opinion. Ten years to honor the retired stars and split the eras - then bring the numbers back into circulation.

How? Worried about seeing #16, #80, #42 or #8 back on the field?

This is actually a great idea.

NFL teams will have to implement something like this in the future. Let's say the NFL survives for another 200 years, what then?

99 numbers, only 15 retired/not available.
84 available numbers...53 man roster.
Were running out? We will end up having 31 unused numbers. Practice squad guys numbers dont matter.

This. I'm not sure this is much of a problem. Plus I have never heard of a team unretiring numbers, I'm not sure that is done.

These numbers should be the ones never used IMO.
8- Steve Young
16- Joe Montana
21- Frank Gore
42- Ronnie Lott
52- Patrick Willis
80- Jerry Rice
97- Bryant Young.
To me, Gore and Willis are the ones I associate the most as 49ers, along with Rice and BY, as I grew up with those guys, I was never a SY fan, but still respect Young.

What's the problem? Only 53 players make the roster. Seems like there's a lot of open numbers. Who cares if they doubled up in camp and preseason games

Plus teams never have 84 players on their roster during season, max is 53, plus 10 man PS, and then any IR'd, PUP'd, NFI'd, but PUP''d would replace a guy on the roster if he is on that list, usually a PUP player who is a vet comes back that season.
Weird, we ended up last year with 83 players under contract at end of 2014. But that's an oddity, as we had like 19 IR'd players, and 4 or 5 on NFI/PUP for the season. Plus 10 man PS.

In 70 years weve retired 12 numbers, plus 3 unofficial. So 15 numbers in 70 years. We would need to retire 30 more numbers to run out of room. So in 140 years we might have a problem.
This is a non-issue. I dont get why people are so interested in disrespecting the greats of the past by bringing their numbers back, just so we "wont run out of numbers".
The 12 we retired deserve the honor, and 97, 21, and 52 should all be retired in the same ceremony as soon as Gore retires. To think otherwise is ridiculous.

I agree with this 100%. I see no issue with doubling up numbers during TC/PreSeason. 97, 21, and 52 need to be honored.
I know some feel like Gore betrayed us, but it's a business, and he felt Indy has a better shot at winning right away, and he got a great deal, so good for him, he deserves the chance at a ring, no guarantee we even have a winning record. I never feel like a player betrayed us by taking the best deal for them and their families. $4M a yr for 3 yrs is better than $4M for 1 yr.
