Contrary to that, the offensive coaching staff sucked, save for the RB coach (who was retained?).

The only A-candidate we had in mind was apparently Adam Gase. BTW, what is so bad about having a HC who was "just" plan B? According to some gossip, same was valid for Jim Harbaugh.
And I don't think that they came SUDDENLY to Jim Tomsula given the speed of his hiring.

Jim Harbaugh was basically Brian Billick part two. A supposed offensive innovator that won a lot of games early on the strength of a great defense while the offense underachieved most of the time. When the defense started to slow down some he couldn't get the offense to pick up the slack. After his first 3 years Billick was 50-46 as Ravens coach.
All good, look at where we were ranked in 2011. I have a much better feeling about this season than last season. Hopefully the OL stays healthy and Kap improves, if so we will be SB contenders.

Coaching matters. SF went from having one of the best coaching staffs in the league to a bunch of guys just happy to have a job. Why should we be excited for the Tomsula era when even our own front office didn't really want him to be HC. We wanted someone else and when that fell apart Suddenly Tomsula was plan B.

Tomsula had a hard time hiring assistant coaches because many in the league think he will be fired after 1 season.

It's cool! Just some douche making pretend he knows what he is doing. But I think it's mostly based towards our new coaching staff vs lost players.

FWIW 49ers ranked #26 after the all-important hall of fame game is in the books with all our division opponents in the top 20. Tomsula is stuck driving metallic pea family truckster instead of getting a new car after Harbaugh's departure. More of the same drivel...I'll be glad to see what they say when we jump 10 spots in their rankings by mid season.

Then why did you respond in this thread? And then proceed to cite previous rankings from previous years as a point of reference?

I'm so glad the internet actually has a history.

Predictions for 2011:

–I'll pause the offensive discussion to finally make my prediction: I'm saying that the 49ers will go 7-9 this season, one victory better than last season, with many more signs of life than at the end of the Singletary run.

The San Francisco 49ers will not have an easy run for the upcoming 2011 season. In addition to undergoing large personnel shifts on several parts of their roster, the team must adjust to a new system from incoming head coach Jim Harbaugh.

These preseason difficulties will be directly seen in worst place for Niners fans: the regular season loss column.

In this preview for the season, each week's game will be reviewed with reasons the 49ers could win, reasons why they could lose and an overall prediction for the game.

19. San Francisco 49ers.

Biggest addition: OLB Aldon Smith. Biggest loss: NT Aubrayo Franklin.

Jim Harbaugh knows quarterbacks, so it's not hard to believe he can turn around Alex Smith and lead the 49ers to the title in a weak division.

For the record, the 49ers were predicted to be good before Harbs joined the team. Furthermore although Sporting News said it was possible for us to win the division, they STILL only ranked us at 19 - so I take that as "possible but good chance not ..."

LMAO! So spot on...sounds eeirly similar to this year too (fans are the same too):

Shoot, someone google the prediction in pre season last year.

"Superbowl contender again, strongest and deepest roster in football, etc." Results: 8-8

Staley was spot on...
