Nice sentiment, but there is no way to rationalize that Tartt was anything but a serious reach.

Is there a difference between having a DB play as LB in a Nickel and a Dime defense? Just curious.

So it is sounding more like he is Patrick Willis replacement. If they had drafted a true ILB at #2, I think most 49er fans would have rated the draft much higher. My guess is that he will be on the field on 1st down, and come out of the game on obvious running downs.

Whilhote will probably start, and play on base downs. On 3rd down (or against teams like New Orleans, Green Bay, etc) when we go to nickel, he'll replace Whilhote and play as the second ILB. Eventually, Tartt will become primarily a SS after we cut Bethea (probably next offseason). I think the "hybrid SS/LB" role will just be at the start of his career.

Well here is my thinking. In a standard 3-4 defense, Tartt is the second ILB. When we go Nickel, he is on the field as the ILB, so Nickel is truly a dime defense. When we are facing a running down, Tartt goes out and Wilhoitte goes in.

I'd say he ends up playing 50% of our defensive snaps. I think Baalke is trying to stay ahead of the curve with teams playing so many 3 WR sets and being able to have someone to cover big athletic TE's (Jimmy Graham) and not sacrifice in run defense. Tartt is perfect for playing against Seattle. He can help, key word being help cus I doubt a rookie will shut him down, cover Graham and he can play the run if Wilson tries the read option

If ward has to watch his back then shouldn't Balke?? If this is true that's 2 first rd picks he whiffed on. Jenkins and ward. 2 reaches

So no, it's not a wasted pick, it's a defensive concept pick. They want size and coverage ability for the defensive set they will be in the most.
Well done sir!

we grabbed Tartt to help contain Jimmy Graham , Ward has the ability to play both safety positions, plus nickel back ...in a perfect world Tartt becomes our Kam Chancellor, we need that safety to lower the boom and install fear into any receivers crossing the middle of the field , we had that element with Whitner & Goldson , with Bethea and Reid we have safeties that are strong in pass coverage , but don't exactly strike fear into the receivers and tight ends, Ward and Tartt are both thumpers that will make WR's & TE's weary of coming at our safeties

That and there were several reports that teams were interesting in moving up to get him. Baalke said there was a "chance" he could have gone later but they decided it wasn't worth the risk and took him. I applaud that. If he's your guy, he's your guy. Don't eff around...

Bingo. Not sure why this is so hard for people to understand. We basically DID draft an ILB...and a future starting SS too. Wilhoite and Bowman will still cover the base downs (or running down) and when teams are in obvious passing situations OR go to 3-4 WR sets, Wilhoite leaves the field and Tartt will come in.

I think this defensive alignment would be pretty formidable against the Run or Pass.
That's really the beauty of all our defensive picks...it allows us so much flexibility without giving up anything in terms of skill sets. Even Wilhoite isn't the worst coverage ILB

Why does NFL countdown or CBS Sports know more about our draft than Trent? That always bugs the hell out of me. When you look at the thots above the pick makes a lot of sense. Actually it makes a lot of sense for the JIMMY grahams out there. I don't know if it works, but we sure needed to do something different from last yr.
