Special Teams: --- 3

PR/KOR: Jeremy Kerley & Trent Taylor

Overall 53:

9 of our 10 rookie draft choices made the 53. 3 rookie UDFA's also made the 53. 6 of the rookies will have prominent starting or starting-like roles (i.e. base downs, nickel/dime downs & special teams). The team attempted to trade Vance McDonald to help add more value elsewhere on the team in a deep draft of TE's but did not get the value they wanted. He makes the team though and Kyle plans on using his athleticism. The team also attempted to trade Ahmad Brook & Garrett Celek to no avail (both cut).

Rookies: QB C.J. Beathard makes the 53 in order to not risk him being taken from our PS. Rookie TE George Kittle adds to Juszczyk's OW depth, versatility and play-making ability. Joe Williams is a great story and has found a home in SF and in this offense. He plays the role of Tevin Coleman here to perfection. Trent Taylor is a rookie chess-piece that Kyle loves to utilize and also adds solid return duties. G Erik Magnuson shows excellent ability in the ZBS and joins as an UDFA. Jon Toth was the second best C in the draft and he makes the 53 to add rookie depth as an UDFA. DE Solomon Thomas is a man on a mission and his versatility adds a ton of run-stopping ability and interior pass rush. NT D.J. Jones just gets better and better and is so stout he wins the base running down role allowing Earl Mitchell to rush more in nickel. Edge Rusher, Pita Taumoepenu is raw but he turns the corner with his hair on fire and plays the role of Frank Clark in our defense in nickel. WILL Reuben Foster is just a heat-seeking missle in this defense. CB Ahkello Witherspoon is the prototype 6'3" CB that edges Donate Johnson out and pairs with Rashard Robinson to make an impressive duo. S Lorenzo Jerome makes the team as ST and S depth.

Practice Squad: --- 12
QB Nick Mullens (UDFA)
WR K.D. Cannon (202)
WR Victor Bolden (UDFA)
TE Cole Hikutini (UDFA)
RB Matt Breida (UDFA)
C Alex Balducci
G J.P. Flynn (UDFA)
G Andrew Eide (UDFA)
ER Noble Nwachuckwu (UDFA)
CB Prince Charles Iwora
CB Jihaad Pretlow (UDFA)
S Malik Golden (UDFA)

Cuts: --- 39
RB's Tim Hightower, Raheem Mostert, DuJuan Harris, Mike Davis & Tyler McCloskey
TE's Garrett Celek (Trade), Blake Bell & Je'Ron Hamm
WR's Eric Rogers, DeAndre Smelter, DeAndre Carter, Chris Harper, Kendrick Bourne, Aaron Burbridge, Bruce Ellington & Rashad Ross
OL's John Theus, Norman Price & Bret Treadway & Darrell Williams Jr
DE's Chris Jones & Zach Moore
NT's Mike Purcell
SAM's Ahmad Brooks (Trade), Carl Bradford & Donavin Newsom
MIKE's Jayson DiManche, Brock Coyle & Shayne Skov
WILL's Wynton McManis & Jimmie Gilbert
CB's JaCorey Shepherd, Zach Franklin
S's Adrian Colbert, Don Jones II, Marcus Ball & Vinnie Sunseri
ST's Nick Rose & Brock Miller

Good show NC. I think there is a chance that Kyle will carry 4 rb's. I still think Hightower will make the team. Looking at his contract they gave him and history (familiarity) with the scheme, I think he sticks around, unless he really stinks it up in camp and preseason. That may mean that they only carry 8 olineman going into the season. You have Kilgore and Zuttah who can play any of the interior positions and Beadles who can play anywhere on the line and that versatility is what would allow them to keep 8 and save an extra roster spot.

Brooks will be interesting. He's 33 and in the last year of his contract. However he has probably been our most consistent player the last few years and is one of the few guys that can drop back in coverage and hold his own or rush from edge and actually get some pressure on the money downs. I'm interested to see what happens with him now or what his game will look like this season. The team moved up for Foster and paid pretty well for Malcom Smith. Im sure they are intending for them to start along with Bowman.

Pita to the practice squad
Jerome to the practice squad
Toth to the practice squad

Vance and Brooks would be ideal trades but I doubt we move both of them.

Wouldn't count out Burbridge just yet.

Doubt we bench Reid for Tartt. We need somebody with vet leadership in the back end.

yup , I still have a feeling he will come on strong in training camp ......Bruce Ellington could contribute if he is healthy and ready to compete, he is still young and Kyle could find work for him in the slot and even as a 3rd down RB , IF and i mean IF, Ellington is 100 percent and still has some explosion left , but he has one hell of a fight on his hands , Trent Taylor has Julian Edelman potential, he could be a serious weapon for us

and I have a feeling it's going to be Hyde, Hightower and Williams as our top 3 backs , Hightower has the potnetial to be a bell cow RB for a game or two if needed , he worked well in Sean Payton's scheme of things

Here's where I'm at with the roster, some could and will change, but most I feel good about.

Locks(Unless something drastically changes):

1. QB 2 Brian Hoyer (Obvious starter, base is fully GTD)
2. QB 7 Matt Barkley (2nd QB for now, unless something changes)
3. QB 3 C.J. Beathard (KS's hand picked QB, he makes it, no way he's cut)
4. RB 28 Carlos Hyde (He gets a chance in KS's offense, he's never been behind a true FB)
5. RB 22 Tim Hightower (Got $300K GTD, plus he's a solid back)
6. RB 33 Joe Williams (KS personally wanted him, so he sticks)
7. FB 44 Kyle Juszczyk (Obvious as he has a fully GTD base)
8. WR 15 Pierre Garcon (Again Fully GTD base, and he knows KS's system)
9. WR 11 Marquise Goodwin (Again fully GTD base, speedster too)
10. WR 17 Jeremy Kerley ($1.1M GTD of his base, best WR from 2016)
11. WR 19 Aldrick Robinson (Knows KS's system, perfect fit for the offense)
12. WR 81 Trent Taylor (Could be our Punt Returner, loved this pick)
13. TE 82 Logan Paulsen (Knows KS's system)
14. TE 85 George Kittle (Perfect fit, a true OW, can be a FB, TE, and H-Back IMO)
15. C 58 Jeremy Zuttah (Perfect fit for the system)
16. C 67 Daniel Kilgore (He stays for versatility unless he looks horrible, then Fusco or Barnes get the nod)
17. LG 68 Zane Beadles (Has $500K GTD, I don't see anyone better on the roster than Beadles)
18. RG 65 Joshua Garnett (Has a fully GTD salary, only his 4th yr is non GTD)
19. LT 74 Joe Staley (Obvious, he's our starting LT)
20. RT 77 Trent Brown (Obvious as well, he is starter at RT, but battles with Gilliam)
21. RT 76 Garry Gilliam (Great depth, swing tackle, battle with Brown)
22. DE 96 Solomon Thomas (Do I need to say anything seriously?)
23. DE 98 Ronald Blair (Underrated player, good pass rusher at App State, he makes it)
24. LEO 91 Arik Armstead (Former 1st rd pick with GTD deal)
25. LEO 59 Aaron Lynch (Makes it as long as he is in shape)
26. LEO 95 Tank Carradine (Has $1M of his base fully GTD)
27. DT 99 DeForest Buckner (Former 1st rd pick with GTD deal)
28. DT 92 Quinton Dial (Has $1.4M GTD in his base)
29. NT 90 Earl Mitchell (Lynch personally said he's the guy they wanted all along, and got him before FA officially opened thanks to him being cut)
30. NT 66 D.J. Jones (Lock for now, because there's no one else behind him, plus he's a big bodied NT)
31. SAM 51 Malcolm Smith ($11.5M fully GTD)
32. SAM 45 Dekoda Watson (got a $1M signing bonus, plus ket ST'er IMO)
33. WILL 56 Reuben Foster (Do I need to say anything?)
34. WILL 54 Ray-Ray Armstrong (Has $875K GTD in his base, plus good LB, won other ILB spot in camp as a guy no one thought would make the 53 man roster)
35. WILL 57 Eli Harold (He gets 1 more year to prove himself)
36. MIKE 53 NaVorro Bowman (Need I say anything but the best MLB and pure Linebacker in the NFL)
37. MIKE 50 Brock Coyle (Got $400K signing bonus, plus a Key ST'er IMO)
38. CB 26 Rashard Robinson (Our #1 CB right now, has a bright future)
39. CB 41 Ahkello Witherspoon (Our #2 CB right now, might battle with Johnson, but has major potential at 6'3)
40. CB 36 Dontae Johnson (Our main reserve CB behind Robinson and Witherspoon, possible starter)
41. CB 24 K'Wuan Williams (Should be the Slot CB)
42. CB 23 Will Redmond (3rd rd pick last year, deserves a chance to play, plus he could have been a 1st rd pick before his injury)
43. FS 25 Jimmie Ward (Team just picked up his 5th-year option, he isn't going anywhere)
44. FS 20 Don Jones (Has $500K GTD in his base, $750K GTD overall in 2yr deal, key ST'er IMO)
45. SS 35 Eric Reid (Fully GTD $5.676M 5th-year option, makes team and starts IMO)
46. SS 29 Jaquiski Tartt (Will play a hybrid S/LB spot)
47. PK 9 Robbie Gould ($1M gtd in his 2yr deal)
48. P 5 Bradley Pinion (No other P in camp)
49. LS 86 Kyle Nelson (Obvious, no other LS)

Battling for Spots:

1. RB 32 DuJuan Harris (Solid back, needs to work on fumbling at goal line)
2. RB 38 Kapri Bibbs (Not sure about him, KS must like him, so he may have the edge)
3. RB 49 Matt Breida (Got $50K in GTD money)
4. WR 6 Kendrick Bourne (Nice sized WR, speedy too)
5. WR 83 KD Cannon (Got a $45K in GTD money)
6. WR 10 Bruce Ellington (Last chance IMO, if he can't get to speed he is out, possibly at first cuts in August)
7. WR 13 Aaron Burbridge (I love AB, but he may be an odd man out)
8. WR 1 Victor Bolden (Smaller WR, but has speed, and could surprise)
9. TE 89 Vance McDonald (Has a fully GTD base salary bit is on trade block)
10. TE 88 Garrett Celek (Has $1M of his salary fully GTD but IMO is on the bubble)
11. TE 84 Blake Bell (Hasn't done much so far in 2 years, would rather keep a true TE, not a converted QB to TE)
12. TE 46 Cole Hikutini (Got a $100K GTD in base salary, plus $10K bonus, he could be a NFI candidate, stash & store for 2018)
13. C 61 Tim Barnes (Hard to tell without knowing his 1yr deal details)
14. LG 63 Brandon Fusco (Hard to tell without knowing his 1yr deal details)
15. LT 71 John Theus (Former 5th rd pick, should get a chance to show he should be here or not)
16. OL 62 Erik Magnuson (Former Michigan RT, could surprise and beat out a vet like Barnes or Fusco for a backup OL spot, can play C and OG as well)
17. OL 75 Darrell Williams Jr. (Will battle with Magnuson, but more a long shot IMO)
18. DT 93 Chris Jones (Got $50K GTD, but the roster is stacked on D-Line, so he has an uphill battle)
19. LEO 49 Pita Taumoepenu (I like him, hoping he impresses, only a 6th rd pick, so he could slip through waivers to the PSquad)
20. SAM 55 Ahmad Brooks (Ideally he should be a starter, but save $5.3M if cut, plus aging veteran)
21. CB 27 Keith Reaser (Never been impressed by Reaser, battling for a DB spot)
22. FS 47 Adrian Colbert (Versatile, can pay FS and CB)
23. FS 48 Lorenzo Jerome (Loved this kid at the Senior Bowl, deserved to be drafted, faster than his 4.7 40 time, I like him to make the roster)

Longshots:

1. QB 1 Nick Mullens (4th QB)
2. RB 31 Raheem Mostert (Too many backs ahead of him)
3. FB 47 Tyler McCloskey (Camp FB)
4. WR 4 DeAndre Carter (Camp WR)
5. WR 14 Rashad Ross (Camp WR)
6. WR 18 DeAndre Smelter (Never impressed me, another failed Baalke ACL pick)
7. C 69 Bret Treadway (Camp Depth)
8. OG 64 Evan Goodman (Camp Depth)
9. OG 60 John Flynn (Camp Depth)
10. OT 78 Norman Price (Camp Depth)
11. LEO 64 Noble Nwachukwu (Could surprise, likely PSquad destined)
12. SAM 60 Jimmie Gilbert ($62K GTD In UDFA deal, but likely PSquad destined)
13. WILL 62 Donavin Newsom (Camp depth)
14. CB 31 Zach Franklin (Camp body)
15. CB 30 Prince Charles Iworah (Camp body)
16. FS 46 Malik Golden (Got $15K GTD, could surprise)
17. SS 40 Vinnie Sunseri (Camp body)
18. PK 6 Nick Rose (Camp Leg)

AB, do you really think Tank Carradine is a lock to make the team?

He's guaranteed $1M in his contract this year, I think he's pretty sure to be coming back.
If we stay fairly healthy and Hoyer plays about how he has over the last 17 we can be a pretty good team possibly with a little luck.

So is Garrett Celek yet AB doesn't have him as a lock. Was just curious why Carradine would be a lock and not Celek

Mainly because better players ahead of Celek rather than Carradine. I think he could be dealt doubt he is cut outright not sure we're gonna eat cap room.
I really like how Matt Maiocco does his roster breakdowns, so I copied his style for my take:

QBs:

LOCK: Hoyer, Barkley
LIKELY: Beathard
LONGSHOT: Mullens

The only drama is if Beathard makes huge gains in preseason, or is so raw they risk putting him on the practice squad. Both scenarios are unlikely.

RBs:

LOCK: Williams, Hyde
LIKELY: Hightower, Bibbs
BUBBLE: Harris, Breida
LONGSHOT: Mostert

I can easily see us keeping four true RBs, but a new regime with their own plans for personnell means nothing is set.

FB:

LOCK: Juszczyk
LONGSHOT: McCloskey

WRs:

LOCK: Garcon, Goodwin, Kerley
LIKELY: Robinson, Taylor
BUBBLE: Cannon, Burbridge, Ellington, Bolden
LONGSHOT: Carter, Bourne, Ross, Smelter

Shanahan wanted Robinson, so he's likely to stay but I believe it'll be a true open competition in camp. Burbridge, Ellington, and Smelter are Baalke's picks and aren't guaranteed any advantage. Cannon and even Bolden have a real shot with a good camp.

TEs:

LOCK: Kittle
LIKELY: McDonald
BUBBLE: Paulsen, Celek, Hikutini
LONGSHOT: Bell

There's six guys competing for 3-4 spots here, and there's no solid case for any of them outside of Kittle. McDonald is already on the trading block. Paulsen is on a one-year contract. Celek is a Baalke guy. Hikutini will have a real shot. Bell will have a chance to prove himself.

OL:

LOCK: Staley, Beadles, Zuttah, Garnett, Brown
LIKELY: Gilliam
BUBBLE: Theus, Kilgore, Fusco, Barnes
LONGSHOT: Williams, Magnuson, Treadway, Flynn, Goodwin

I don't blame the FO for not dipping into a weak OL draft class. Our starting five was hindered by injury more than anything else, and has a chance to be league average or better. The question marks are depth, and the common story here is that Baalke guys like Kilgore and Theus aren't guaranteed anything. Even though we pried Gilliam away from Seattle, I don't think he's a lock as there's a lot of bodies here competing and he could end up the 11th/10th guy in a 10/9-man OL roster.

DL:

LOCK: Thomas, Buckner, Mitchell, Jones
LIKELY: Armstead, Dial
BUBBLE: Blair, Jones, Carradine, Lynch, Harold, Watson, Taumoepenu
LONGSHOT: Nwachuckwu, Gilbert

There's going to be some messiness in categorizing between D-line and linebacker in our new defense, and also accounting for the versatility that some of these guys might show in camp. I'm counting LEO as a D-line position here, and the lack of any locks or likely in that position, outside of Armstead, shows how open that competition will be. Pita T maybe has the easiest path to LEO, but might still be a P-squad candidate.

LBs:

LOCK: Bowman, Foster, Smith, Armstrong
LIKELY: Brooks, Coyle
LONGSHOT: Newsom

This may be our most stable grouping on the roster behind FB. The only question is really about Foster's health.

CBs:

LOCK: Witherspoon, Johnson, Robinson
LIKELY: Redmond, Reaser, Williams
BUBBLE: Iwora, Colbert
LONGSHOT: Franklin

Redmon and Reaser are Baalke picks; the former needs to prove himself healthy and the latter needs to outwork the guys underneath him. Special teams will play a role in who gets these spots as well.

Ss:

LOCK: Ward, Tartt, Reid
BUBBLE: Jerome, Golden
LONGSHOT: Jones, Sunseri

Jerome may be better placed in the "likely" category, but its too early to confirm the hype so I'll keep him on the bubble so far. However, it's likely that one of Jerome or Golden will outplay Jones and claim the 4th safety spot.

ST:

LOCK: Gould, Pinion, Nelson
LONGSHOT: Rose

OVERALL:

I have 45 "locks" or "likely", meaning the top camp battles will be over the remaining 8 spots, including: RB1/2, WR4/5/6, TE, OL depth, DL depth, and safety. On the offensive side, fitting a role in Shanahan's offense, without regard to draft status, will be the X-factor, and on defense special teams will likely decide who gets a roster spot and who's on the practice squad.

I like that too sspiker!
AB, this the time of yr when i get feeling more comfortable wth the final roster, and you come up with the contracts , GTD, vs not, that makes the whole process take on an entirely different view. Guys i thot might be gone, when you see that GTD...well, you have to change your opinion somewhat. Cannot tell you how much guys like me appreciate this as this is just as important as the battle between two young guys with equal talent....and then we see their contracts, and it all changes. So once again, thank you for all your work , study and fact finding. This is the stuff that most fans don't appreciate, yet very well may dictate who stays/ who goes. Thanks, man.
Hopefully Lynch is on the phone trying to trade guys right now that most likely won't make our 53 man roster, or are to old to really be a part of the future here. I'd be shopping guys like Brooks+Celek+Bell+Reid, and others like that for anything we can get. Reid is in the final year of his deal, and if we trade him, we save his 5+ million dollar salary. Reid is being moved to SS, and I'd rather see what we have in Tartt. Some of the other guys like Brooks, Celek, and Bell might not have much value, but anything is better than nothing. I could see Celek netting us a 6th round pick easily, perhaps Bell nets us something like a 6th/7th, and Brooks might net us the same?

Main thing here, is that I'd rather move these guys early, and let teams get them in their camps early. We need to be playing the kids, and seeing what we have in them.

Gilliam is a lock they offered a multi year deal but got him for one year with $1.25m fully GTD, also Armstead is a lock guaranteed salary, Dial as well he has $1.4m GTD, and Don Jones is a lock to me with Coyle and Watson, as Jones has $500k GTD in his base, while Coyle, got a $400k bonus and Watson got a $1m bonus. I also doubt Ronald Blair is on the bubble he is a lock to me he fits perfectly can play DE and DT and even the LEO possibly.
