"Last season, Armstead played mostly on third downs. Passing downs. Mangini didn't trust the rookie first-round pick to stop the run.

Mangini had his reasons. Armstead is a former basketball player who looked more like a basketball player than a football player last year. Had very little muscle definition for a defensive lineman. Opposing teams would have run right at him if he played on running downs. Armstead was effective only as a pass rusher.

He's a totally different athlete this year. All of a sudden he looks like the strongest player on the team. Looks like Goliath, but bigger.

Now, Armstead is the focal point of the defensive line. O'Neil loves him. In the 3-4 base defense, Armstead plays defensive end — Ray McDonald's old position. And in the nickel defense, Armstead moves all around. On first and second down he plays right outside linebacker — Aldon Smith's old position. On third down, sometimes he plays defensive tackle — Justin Smith's old position — and sometimes he plays defensive end."

Yeah same here...people need to realize that these kids are just that coming out of college, kids. Most leave after two years (AA was there for 3 but didn't get snaps until 2013 and was focusing on basketball as well) trying to make that cash before they breakdown.. It takes time for them to adjust to the NFL and the upgrade in talent around them. Everyone wants instant gratification but it's not always realistic (especially with college scheme vs NFL)...get them full-time in the weight room focusing just on football for the first year. I'm expecting a lot of our younger guys to make that turn this year.

"Leap year" baby...for a number of our young bucks. I hope they can do it.

Yeah. But I like what he is saying about AA's physicality this season. Appears to have muscled up.

Agree

He's still ayoung kid and hasn't gotten to full strength yet.

Will be very interesting to see the improvement this season.

Which is scary b/c I think he looked like the strongest DL on the field last year. And now with Buckner on the other side and Williams/Dial/Purcell active inside.

Just gotta keep rotating players.
