Probably a 1yr vet minimum deal, with no bonus, also doesn't effect our comp picks since he was cut by Miami.
camp fodder

Quality pickup and he's got some skills. And ILB in our 3-4 is one of the easiest positions to plug-and-produce.
More excitement over this signing then our selection today & that's not saying much

Holiday released....... really wanted to see this guy return kicks

Wheeler is a good, no-risk signing. Holliday's release suggests J.Hayne might already be proving himself as a KR specialist.

That would be bloody awesome! Hope you're right.

So a 4th string MLB with no upside has you more excited than a 1st round DT with huge upside?

I swear, a month ago most of the fans on here knew nothing about Armstead. Now that theyve all read some negative things about him, all the sudden everyone is an expert on how his career will pan out?

He was horrible in Miami, pretty solid in Oakland. We will soon find out which version we are getting.

will be re-united with Tarver.

I predict a very similar career to Kentwan Balmer aka KB 2.0

no,., i think it will be a bit more than that. time will tell but that is what i think
Insightful article right here...well done PG (shocker); it's probably well done b/c he's a former Raider.

Paul Gutierrez, ESPN Staff Writer: http://espn.go.com/blog/san-francisco-49ers/post/_/id/13667/philip-wheeler-hoping-to-make-his-mark-with-49ers

Entering his eighth season in the NFL, linebacker Philip Wheeler is on his fourth team.

So what, exactly, about the San Francisco 49ers appealed to Wheeler, who was originally a third-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2008?

"Traditionally, it's a winning organization with a very winning tradition," Wheeler said after last week's open organized team activities (OTAs). "And even though it's a new coach, he was already here, so he knows the team. There's a lot of loyalty here, some straight-up people.

"It's not quite rebuilding because it's not a bad team."

After landing with his fourth team in five seasons, Philip Wheeler is hoping he's found a home in San Francisco. Ronald C. Modra/Getty ImagesThe Niners, after three straight trips to the NFC title game and a Super Bowl appearance fueled by a dominant defense, fell back to the pack with a 8-8 record last year.

They will also be without six defensive players who started at least eight games last year -- defensive linemen Ray McDonald and Justin Smith, linebackers Chris Borland andDan Skuta and cornerbacks Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver, plus five-time All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis, who retired after appearing in just six games last year with a bum toe.

So yeah, the opportunity for reps also played into the decision for Wheeler, who was cut by the Dolphins in an early-March cost-cutting purge with him set to make $3 million this season after signing a $26 million deal in 2013. He signed a free-agent deal with the Niners the morning of the NFL draft in April.

But after starting his previous 32 games -- 16 for both the Raiders and Dolphins -- in 2012-13, Wheeler was a starter just four times in his 15 games last season and had 45 tackles in struggling "both against the run and pass," NFL Nation Dolphins reporter James Walker wrote. "Opponents noticed, and he became a liability on defense."

But thus far in OTAs, Wheeler and other backups such as Nick Moody andShayne Skov have been catching the eye of that new head coach Wheeler referenced.

"They're all getting their reps and the whole group is really working hard and there's some good football being played by them," Jim Tomsula said last week. "Again, we're in May; we're not in August. And we don't have shoulder pads on and we're running around.

"But everything that we're asking them to do at this point and the way they are moving has been -- it's a really good group."

In his lone season with the Raiders in 2012, Wheeler was a stalwart albeit for a team that went just 4-12 and had the No. 18-ranked total defense.

His defensive coordinator that year? New Niners senior defensive assistant/linebackers Jason Tarver, which was another reason the 49ers appealed to Wheeler.

"I think I played well under J.T.," said Wheeler, who had a career-high three sacks and two forced fumbles and added six passes defensed in 2012.

But in Oakland, Wheeler was the Raiders' weakside linebacker in their 4-3 scheme and played a similar role for the Dolphins. How does that translate in Santa Clara, where he is penciled in as a backup at inside linebacker to NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite?

"Here, the outside linebacker in a 4-3 is like the Will in a 3-4," Wheeler said. "They like their outside linebackers to be a little bigger here."

Wheeler is listed at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds. Compare that to the size of Aldon Smith (6-4, 265) and Aaron Lynch (6-5, 270).

"I feel like I'm versatlile enough," Wheeler said. "I played inside in the Raiders' nickel (defense), so I've done it before."

But can he do it again, and for the Niners?

I like Wheeler cause in Oakland he was a beast but its going to take a reincarnation of that tenure instead of his time in Miami where he was soft against the run and weak against the block and finally got benched,to beat out Moody or Wilhoite (not a fan of Wilhoite other than special teams).
