Thomas has a lot of upside and could develop into an above average left guard, being that he played LT in college, his pass protection should be stellar and provide better protection for Kaep .....Martin was thrown into the fire earlier than expected and more than held his own ....Kilgore may have a fight on his hands if Thomas and Martin come into camp strong and ready to mash some defensive lineman ......
what do you guys think ? ...are we settled and our offensive line ready to go? ...or do we need to draft an offensive lineman maybe in the 3rd or 4th round to compete for playing time

Do you have faith in Brandon Thomas & Marcus Martin to step it up?

? Kilgore is the center and one of our best lineman for a few years. No reason (if healthy) he doesn't come back strong at center. Martin will prob play G and fight for a starting spot there. Brandon Thomas ? we tallmenbout backups, backups?

Who said Brandon Thomas is a backup? Guy is very talented and only reason he fell was due to his knee injury. If he's fully healthy he should certainly have a good chance to win the Iupati replacement job.
I think both guys will be main stays on our line for many years to come assuming we can re-sign them.

Both guys are an upgrade from Iupati. I never felt Iupati was that good. Iupati was decent in run blocking but absolutely ATROCIUOS in pass blocking. These guys are an upgrade NO DOUBT in my mind so long as they both can stay healthy.

I think Thomas wins the LG position. Martin is at a disatvantage, in that he will start out competing at center. I think Kilgore wins that battle on experience and consistency, even though Martin is physically superior. If we are truly transitioning to a predominately ZBS running attack, I would expect Boone to struggle. If he struggles, I hope they have the guts to try Martin at RG. That will tell us a lot about this staff, imo. Will they replace a well-paid vet who is underfperforming? Will they allow him to struggle, hoping he pulls through?
Obviously, this is speculation. In the past, Boone has struggled with lateral agility and the ability to keep his pads low while zone stepping. That could be due to unfamiliarity with the steps and technique (we've ran zone infrequently since he's been here), or it could be a physical issue that will not resolve itself easily.

No question! I wish I could find that pick of Martin "slimmed down." He's was a fatty coming in and never got healthy d/t all the injuries but still, you could see his potential. The slimming down a lot tells me 3 things:
1. He's healthy
2. He's gearing up hard for a starting spot and
3. We may be moving to a ZBS
Either way, there is going to be a monster competition at 2 of the 3 (all 3, I hope) interior positions this off season!

Martin is 22 and Thomas is 24 if they pan out the 49er O-Line will be in good shape for years to come.

I think they'll be fine and this scheme will match our talent much better. I think Kilgore and Thomas can play either scheme, but staley and Davis should excel with ZBS.
I also think Martin played in ZBS at USC and Hyde ran behind one at Ohio State. Martin had to adjust to new scheme and wasn't healthy, let's hope he's ready to go this year.

That's the one thing that we can offer that other teams really can't: we can send Scotty his players, though we don't have many of them left. That's a great shot in the arm to a guy trying to reshape a roster. Maybe #15, Boone, and #46 to move up to #5 (if the guy we want is still there). We really won't know enough about how McDonald and Carrier are doing for us to dangle Vernon at him (at least Vernon has already showed up for the off season program).
edit: how pissed would Boone be if we kept him around to compete for the swing tackle spot?
